Slide Content

Coursework – Film Magazine Brief requirements • Statement of Intent (approx. 500 words). • Magazine covers and contents pages: Two or three pages for each of the first two editions (based on choice of single or double page spread). • Magazine distribution method: Content must be suitable for retail distribution. • Number of web pages: One homepage and one linked page.  • Cross media production target audience: A primarily 16–25-year-old middle and upmarket media literate audience.

Criteria for success • At least four different main images using original photography across the magazine covers and contents pages.  • Editing of magazine covers and contents pages (including photos, text, graphics, typography and layout). • Written text including elements such as the masthead, main coverline, selling lines, headlines, captions, subtitles and copy. • Barcode, date, edition and price information on each front cover. • A different use of mise- en - scène for each cover. • At least two models representing at least two different social groups (e.g. as defined by age, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality). • A call to action pointing readers to the online website.

Codes and conventions of a film magazine Cover image  A large image of a movie star, poster or still from a new blockbuster/ newly released film to tease what the contents of the magazine is. Targets the specific demographic intended to be reached, and image is used to catch the eye of this specific demographic Masthead Usually the name of the magazine, written in large letters to stand out to by passers and to look strong.  Typically fits the genre of the magazine. Text should be larger than any other text on the cover Language Language relevant to the film industry to display expertise and show readers that the magazine is informative. Language must also fir the demographic of readers in order for them to be interested  Sell lines Often referred to as 'cover lines', usually positioned towards the sides of the magazine cover so that the main image can be framed and will be the centre of attention.  Price, date and issue number Nearly always positioned in the corner and out of the way of the main attractions of the magazine, this information will let the buyer know how recent this issue is, judging by the date and issue number.

Image:  Featuring 3 cover stars, mid angle long range shots of them each stood posing in their selected characters, glaring into the distance.  Typography: Huge bold writing among the front of the page displaying the title of the film magazine, promenent font creating an eye catching aspect to the front cover. Eyecatching orange colour is used to grab attention of people throughout the cover, and on the other hand of the colour spectrum, colours such as black contrasting the bright, piercing orange Language is emotive, exclamation marks representing the level of emotion carried throughout the text. Language is used in order to advertise "Dune" and make it appeal to readers or bypassers Audience: Magazine seems as if it is aimed toward young adults, judging by the large image of cover stars, bright colour scheme used and emotive language techniques used. Front cover also features numerous adverts that will appeal to more youthful audiences such as "Marvel exclusives!"

Examples of posters from successful film poster companies

Image: Mis en scene is image of cover star "Spike Lee" with direct mode of address, glaring directly at us through the hole created with his hands with his eyeline above ours, portraying that he is in a place of power Shot type: Close up, shot is also low angle,  portraying a sense of power and ambience from the cover star  Typography: Bold white font displaying the strapline "Spike Lee", white standing out and contrasting to the background of the image. Yellow text also included in subheading nicely complimenting the white. Title of magazine " sight&sound " appears above The main headline in smaller text, less eye-catching than the main bold headline Layout and Design: Barcode positioned in the bottom left-hand corner, out of the way of any text and does not cover much of the image. Z rule is used here as the main bulks of text appear along the Z line Price is in the bottom left in the same place as the barcode, out of the way Language: Text in this issue is limited, not a great deal of emotive language used, text is clear and organised in a tidy manner, used to be more informative than entertaining.

Two cover starts looking straight at the camera, making direct mode of address to the audience  Mis en scene, two individuals dressed in formal clothing, portraying a feel of authority and class. The cover stars are making direct contact, creating a bond with the reader, drawing them in, making them feel involved with the cover stars.  Z rule: Z rule is used in this mock up in order for readers to scan and consume information subconsciously, which is useful when creating a piece that will appeal to the 16-15 year old audience, as the younger generation tent to pay less deep attention to things, and will gain more entertainment from absorbing eye catching colours, headlines and text.  Colour placed carefully around page in positions that will catch the eye of the youthful 16-25 year old audience.  Audience plays a big part in the layout of this magazine cover. The magazine must be designed in a way that will reach out and appeal to the young audience of 16-25 year olds. This demographic can be easy to target as the use of bright colours and intriguing images.
