Handicraft Commonly refer to handmade crafts or artisanry. It is mostly defined as “items made by hand, often with the use of simple tools, and are generally artistic and for traditional in nature.

Types of handicrafts Wood crafting Textile Decorative paper Functional, and Fashion craft

Crochet Crochet is a patterned fabric created by looping material with a hooked needle. The most popular material used to crochet is yarn. The interlocking of the loops is done by using a crochet hook. Actually, the word “crochet” comes from the French word “crochet” which means “small hook”.

Crochet tools and materials Crochet hook Darning needle Yarn Stitch markers Stuffing Safety eyes Scissors Rhinestones

Crochet hooks  come in different sizes, ranging from a tiny 1.8mm to a jumbo 10mm or even more. The  size of the hook you need  depends on the project you're going to be working on. Many crocheters eventually buy a set of matching hooks in different sizes, but if you're brand new, you might prefer to just pick up one hook at a time for now.

Darning Needles Yarn Darners are very long hand sewing needles with long threading eyes and are ideal for spanning large holes during mending, using yarn or cotton. U se these crocheting tools to weave in your ends when you finish crocheting. They are usually available in metal or plastic, and are much thicker than regular sewing needles, allowing you to thread your yarn.

Yarn  There are many different types of yarn, you can get giddy with its selection. After you get better at crocheting, you will definitely want to experiment with different materials, textures, sizes and colors.

Stitch Marker Stitch markers are little plastic or metal instruments that are inserted into specific stitches in your crochet projects where you want it to be landmarked. They are useful for marking the start of each amigurumi round and for keeping count of rows.

Stuffing  Another item on the checklist which is often not needed in other crochet projects is stuffing! Common types of stuffing to use include polyfil and recycled yarn stash. I have also use foam packing peanuts before for stuffing which is fine for ornamental pieces but probably not for toys played by kids.

Safety eyes There are many options for creating eyes for your amigurumi and safety eyes is a popular option. They are most commonly used because they have a washer placed within the amigurumi which locks it in place.

Rhinestones Another great accessory we use frequently, sometimes for eyes or clothing detailing like buttons.

Scissors are a small tool with two sharp blades which are screwed together. You use scissors for cutting things such as paper and cloth.

Basic Crochet Stitches

Crochet Chain “Ch”

The basic chain stitch, abbreviated in patterns as " ch. " Most crochet projects begin with the chain stitch as a grouping, typically referred to as a starting chain, base chain, or a foundation chain.

Crochet Slip Stitch“Sl ”

Crochet slip stitches  are small and simple. They are the foundation of all crochet. The abbreviation for slip stitch in a pattern is usually " sl   st. " The most frequent use of the slip stitch is when you're working in the round, and you'll be instructed to "join with a slip stitch to  form a ring " or "slip stitch to close round."

Single Crochet Stitch “Sc”

The  single crochet stitch  broadens your ability to crochet even more projects. Many patterns include the single crochet stitch, which is abbreviated as " sc ."Single crochet stitches are short stitches that create a dense fabric.

Half Double Crochet Stitch “ Hdc ”

Half double crochet stitch  builds upon the basic single crochet stitch by adding an extra step. The height of half double crochet stitch is halfway between single and double crochet stitch. The stitch, abbreviated as " hdc ," shows up in many projects. Though the half double crochet is a little more open than the single crochet stitch, it still offers enough density to create warm projects. The half double crochet stitch also builds fabric quicker than the single crochet stitch. This stitch is helpful when you want to crochet a project in a hurry.

Double Crochet Stitch “Dc”

The  double crochet stitch , abbreviated "dc," combines well with all the other basic stitches. The double crochet stitch is the cornerstone of granny square crochet,  filet crochet ,  v-stitch crochet , and other popular crochet patterns. These patterns incorporate the basic double crochet to change the look of an otherwise basic project.

Treble Crochet Stitch “Tc”

The  treble crochet stitch , also known as the triple crochet stitch, is abbreviated in patterns as "tr." The stitch is taller than the double crochet stitch and follows the same basic steps. Once you know how to double crochet, you can make many different types of taller crochet stitches including the  double treble , triple treble, and even taller stitches. This stitch allows you to quickly add height to a project.

Beadwork , use of beads in fabric decoration; beads may be individually stitched, applied in threaded lengths, or actually woven into the material, the weft threaded with beads before being woven in.

Commonly recognized forms of beadwork include bead stringing, off-loom bead weaving, bead looming, bead embroidery, braiding with beads, and wire wrapping with beads. There are others, but those are some of the most common types of beadwork.

B ead S tringing

Bead stringing is the most straightforward form of beadwork, but that doesn't mean it is the simplest. Stringing beads involves adding beads to any type of thread, cord, elastic, leather, beading wire or similar material. The resulting beadwork can be a single strand, multiple strands, or braided strands. The beads may be separated with knots, such as pearls often are, or other spacer beads. Stringing beads on an elastic cord is a great way to get started making beaded bracelets. Stringing beads on beading wire is a great way to make necklaces, bracelets or even earrings.

O ff-loom  Bead W eaving

Some beadwork is done by using a needle and thread and one or more beading stitches to create an intricate chain or fabric of beads. This type of beadwork is referred to as off-loom bead weaving. Bead weaving is most often done with small beads called seed beads. These beads were named because of their resemblance to seeds. Seed beads range in size from very small to large, and even include different shapes such as cubes, bugle beads and drop beads that do not necessarily share the small, round shape of a traditional seed bead.

B ead Looming

A bead loom is a device used to weave beads into a cloth-like beaded fabric. It can be used to create strips of flat-beadwork or larger sized beaded panels that can be incorporated into purses or used as artwork. In loom beadwork, the beads align in rows and columns. Loom beading is faster than off-loom bead stitches but requires some additional steps to set up the loom before you can get started with  loom beading .

B ead Embroidery

Bead embroidery is another type of beadwork where beads are stitched or sewn onto a fabric or backing. There are several types of bead embroidery stitches, and bead embroidery can be used either by itself or in conjunction with another craft such as cross-stitch or quilting. Bead embroidery is one of several beadwork techniques favored by Native Americans for embellishing clothing and other items.

B raiding with Beads

Bead knitting, bead crochet, kumihimo with beads, and macrame with beads are also considered beadwork. To do bead knitting or bead crochet, the beads are first strung onto a heavy thread in a particular pattern and are then incorporated into the knitting or crochet.  Kumihimo is a style of braiding that uses a disk, but the beads are also strung in advance of braiding. Macrame is a knotting technique that can incorporate beads into the overall design.

BeadWorks

Seed Beads T ools and Materials Beading Thread Beading Needle Cutter

Seed beads are the main material that is used for bead weaving. They are available in numerous colors and shapes. As per the weaver’s choice seed beads can be selected and bought for the work.

Beading thread is used while working with seed beads. The thread that is used for bead weaving has to be strong and supple and also thin enough to pass through a small bead. Beading threads are often made of nylon. Nymo and KO are some of the good beading threads.

The needle used for bead weaving should be usually shorter and firmer. It is preferred to use the same size of needle as the bead size. In case of making lot of passes through some beads then it is preferred to choose a smaller needle to weave the beads.

Cutter is used for cutting the excess thread and cutting off the thread once completing the process of bead weaving.

Types of Beads

Acrylic This type of bead is considered one of the most popular because it sums up the most available beads in the market. It is a term used for beads made of plastic or polymer materials, such as resin. What made these bead types so famous is their low price, light fabrics, and versatility in different creations and projects. Quality-wise, it can be compared to glass beads and wooden beads.

Charms Charms (also known as memory beads), These charms immortalize a memory in different designs, cuts, shapes, and sizes. Often made out of metal, cubic zirconia, or sterling silver, beads of this kind usually come with hooks. These are easy-attached details to allow users to change their bead style from one look to another, honoring the charm bracelet trend people have loved since childhood.

C rystal Beads When exceptionally high-quality glass beads are cut into different shapes and facets, they are called crystal beads. Different cut designs are present among this trinket, like rounds, rondelle beads, bicones , and Rivoli beads. One of the most well-liked types of crystal beads are the ones named Swarovski stones, glass beads cut and given a facet to add additional glitter. A cheaper counterpart of the Swarovski stone is the Czech crystal. This bead is often used to add sparkly details to wedding gowns and fancy accessories, and some also add elements to intricate jewelry and bling.

Pearl Bead s One bead that is undoubtedly here to stay is the pearl bead. This fashion favorite has become a staple for women who love a string of pearls. The most famous pearl beads are the ones produced from fresh water, called freshwater pearls, and their synthetic counterpart, the glass pearl beads. Freshwater pearls are naturally produced, making them more expensive. These pearls are used in more pricey jewelry creations. Glass beads, on the other hand, are used as an alternative since they are cheaper and more available in the market. However, both are equally loved in the jewelry-making process.

Wooden Beads Wooden beads are trendy but usually less preferred than luxurious-looking ones. Unfortunately, wooden beads have received a hostile reception from some people because they seem to look cheap. However, regarding quality and durability, this type of bead jewelry is considered one of the most durable and versatile. Also, unlike other delicate beads, wooden beads can be painted, drilled, dyed, molded into something, and even carved.
