Tone and Mood in Poetry

Group Activity 1 (Act and Guess that Emoticon) 7-8 mins.

MECHANICS: The group to act out and guess the emoticon will be determined through draw lots. 2) The teacher will flash an emoticon. Each group will choose one member to act out the emotion flashed on the screen, while the other group members will guess what emotion it represents. 1 correct guess = 1 pt.

3) If the group fails to get the correct answer, other groups will be given a chance to guess and steal the points. 4) The first group to get 5 points wins.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Define tone in poetry; Demonstrate appreciation for the way a poet’s tone influences meaning by sharing personal interpretations during class discussions; Annotate a short poem by underlining words or phrases that reveal the speaker’s tone and write a brief explanation of their choice. Participate and involve oneself to the group activity to complete a shared goal

ACTIVITY #2: Give the meaning of the underlined word based on context. 1. My mind is sharp and my grip is tight. Meaning: Keep a firm hold of 2. Each step is full of vigor and strength. Meaning: physical strength and good health

ACTIVITY 3: Read each stanza below . Poem 1- Even in clouds, I see the light, A golden thread through darkest night. I hold on tight, I will not fall, For dreams still rise when shadows call. 1. What do “clouds” symbolize? 3. What does “shadows call” mean? 2. What does the line "Even in clouds, I see the light" suggest about the speaker’s attitude (or tone) toward difficult situations? Which lines show the speaker’s determination to keep going despite challenges, and what words or images help create that feeling?

5. What does tone in poetry mean? TONE -conveys the author’s attitude toward the subject. It is shaped by diction or choice of words and detail. I miss you. I whisper to the stars above, Each night I ache for your lost love . 💔

Examples of Positive Tones in Literature: admiring, adoring, affectionate, appreciative, approving, calm, casual, celebratory, cheerful, comforting, comic, compassionate, confident, contented, delightful, calm, lively, romantic, encouraging, excited, expectant, forthright/outspoken, friendly, funny, gleeful, happy, hilarious, hopeful, humorous, interested, joyful, light, lively, optimistic, passionate, playful, proud, straightforward, sympathetic, relaxed, respectful, etc.

Examples of Negative Tones in Literature: ambiguous, angry, annoyed, antagonistic, anxious, bitter, bossy, cold, conceited, confused, demanding, depressed, desperate, disappointed, disrespectful, doubtful, embarrassed, enraged, fearful, frightened, doubtful, skeptical
