Topic 3: Curriculum Design for Early Childhood Physical Education DECE 4123 PHYSICAL EDUCATION FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

SUBTOPIC 3.1 Principles of Age-Appropriate Curriculum Development 3.2 Integrating Physical Education into Daily Activities 3.3 Designing Varied and Engaging Physical Education Lesson Plans

Overview Physical education is distinguished from other curricular areas by its primary focus on the body and on physical experience and is an integral part of the educational process, without which the education of the child is incomplete. Through a diverse range of experiences providing regular, challenging physical activity, the balanced and harmonious development and general well-being of the child is fostered. Physical education meets the physical needs of the child and the need for movement experiences, challenges and play. It develops a desire for daily physical activity and encourages constructive use of free time and participation in physical activities in adult life. To fulfil these needs, physical education is built on the principles of variety and diversity, not of specialisation. It provides a wide variety of movement activities appropriate to the level of development of the child.

Overview Through physical education the child can experience the joy of physical exertion and the satisfaction of achievement while developing skills and positive attitudes that enhance self-esteem. Physical education provides opportunities to develop desirable personal and social attributes: the concept of fair play, the acceptance of success and failure, and the ability to co-operate in group situations. These opportunities contribute to the understanding and promotion of a healthy life-style. Physical education, as an integral part of the total curriculum, provides vital opportunities for the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of the child.

3.3 Designing Varied and Engaging Physical E ducation Lesson Plans Health (20%) Lesson Idea: Have a "Healthy Habits Day" where students do simple exercises, learn about nutritious foods through a "healthy snack" activity, and talk about the importance of washing hands. Motor Skills (50%): Lesson Idea: Create a series of fun and active stations where students can rotate through activities that focus on different motor skills. For example, a station for jumping and hopping, another for drawing and coloring , and a third for practicing catching and throwing. Social Skills (30%): Lesson Idea: Organize group games that require teamwork and cooperation, such as a relay race where each child has a specific role. Incorporate activities that encourage communication, like a "Show and Tell" session where kids talk about their favorite physical activities.

3.3 Designing Varied and Engaging Physical E ducation Lesson Plans Create engaging physical education lesson plans for kindergarten-aged children (5-6 years old) with a mix of activities. Begin with a lively warm-up, introducing basic movements and coordination exercises. Incorporate imaginative themes, balance games, and obstacle courses for variety. Include dance and movement to lively music, fostering creativity. Integrate team games and cooperative activities for social development. Conclude with a cool-down featuring stretching and relaxation. Reflect on the session and provide positive reinforcement. Adapt plans based on children's needs and interests, ensuring a fun and enjoyable experience.

3.3 Designing Varied and Engaging Physical E ducation Lesson Plans Engaging physical education lesson plans for children aged 0-4 include sensory play adventures, animal movement activities, music and movement exercises, obstacle course exploration, water play, gross motor games, parachute play, balancing activities, nature-inspired adventures, and free play exploration. Emphasis is on fun, cooperation, and fundamental movement skills, fostering sensory stimulation and motor development in a safe and adaptable environment.

3.3 Designing Varied and Engaging Physical E ducation Lesson Plans Time Activity Objective Materials 5 mins Welcome and Free Play Allow infants to explore and play freely in a safe environment. Soft mats, age-appropriate toys 10 mins Sensory Play: Tummy Time Develop neck and upper body strength through supervised tummy time.
