Pre-natal
Period
A fetus grows inside its
mother’s womb.
Fromasinglecelltoan
organismcompletewithbrain
andbehavioralcapabilities
It gets its nutrition through a
tube called the umbilical
cord.
Infancy
0-2years
They experience rapid
growthphysically and
mentally during the first two
years of their lives.
A time of extreme
dependenceon adults. Many
psychological activities are
just beginnings.
Over the first year, they learn
to reach, touch andhold
objects, crawland walk.
These are preschool years. Carefor
themselves, develop social readiness
skills and spend many hours in play.
Children are more independent
than babies. Physical changes also
slow down.
They are said to be like sponges, as
they learn things quickly and
easily.
Early
Childhood
(3-5years)
Children become teenagers and physical
changes begin to make the bodies of males
and females look increasingly different.
They begin to establish their own identityand
aim for a sense of belonging and acceptance.
The child is formally exposed to the larger world
and its culture. Achievement becomes more
central theme and self-control increases.
Middle & Late
Childhood
(6-12 years )
Changes in body contour, and the
development of sexual
characteristics
Begins with rapid physical changes-
dramatic gains in height and weight
Pursuit of independence and identity are
prominent
