Which country is this?
What do you know about its
culture or music?
Both Philippines and Indonesia are
rich in cultural traditions. Let’s
discover how their local music reflects
shared Southeast Asian identity.
What is Traditional
Folk Music?
Traditional or folk music is music that comes form the
people. It is passed down from generation to generation
and reflects the daily life, beliefs, and emotions of a
community.
In Southeast Asia, folk music is more than entertainment –
it is a way of storytelling and preserving cultural memory.
Examples:
Philippines - Sugidanon
Indonesia - Sulukan
The Panay Bukidnon
People ..
The Panay Bukidnon are the indigenous people living in
the interior highlands of Iloilo, Capiz, Aklan, and Antique.
They live simple lives, farming, weaving, and trading root
crops. They are known for their deep respect for nature and
for their oral traditions, especially the Sugidanon – their
form of epic chanting. A performer called the
manugsugidanon chants these stories in the Kinaray-a or
Ligbok language.
The Panay Bukidnon
People ..
The chanting can be done in three styles:
1.Soft Chant (Pangalimog): calm, slow, almost
humming.
2.Lively chant: more energetic, with longer phrases.
3.Traditional chant: repetitive lines and rhythmic flow.
The Sugidanon preserves the history, beliefs, and moral
lessons of the Panay Bukidnon community.

Indonesia and its
Cultural Diversity
Indonesia is the largest country in
Southeast Asia, made up of more than
17,000 islands and 300 ethnic groups. Its
national motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”
means “Unity in Diversity”. Despite their
differences, Indonesians are united by
shared traditions such as Wayang Kulit, a
traditional shadow puppet theater where
Sulukan is performed.
What is Sulukan ?
Sulukan is a form of vocal music
performed during the Wayang
Kulit shadow puppet theatre. It is
sung by the Dhalang (puppet
master) to set the mood, epress
emotions, and guide the story. The
Sulukan acts like background
music that helps the audience
understand the story’s tone –
whether it is sad, mysterious or
triumphant. It shows how music
and storytelling are deeply
connected in Indonesian culture.
