“For the best return on your money – Pour your purse into your head.” ― Benjamin Franklin
“Operations will get you the Top Line – Only Learning will make a difference to the Bottom Line “.
On Teacher’s Day, let us truly introspect the stature accorded to the “Learning Function” in an Organisation . (Let us assume, that the function of “Training” is subsumed in the broader ambit of “Learning”). It is time we went beyond the rhetoric of Noble Intent , Team and Self Development .
Let us see what our frank and honest answers are to these questions:-
5. Do we think that the Organisation earns its bread and butter through Operations and not through Learning?
The only solution is to change the Organisational Mindset before it is too late!! It might help if we think of Learning in the following contexts.
Again, if the answers to all or most of the questions above is YES, the only way to get the above benefits is to STOP thinking of Learning as a Cost.
Consider this…….
What needs to be done? We need to introspect in an unbiased manner on whether opportunities are offered for “Learning” in the Organisation vis a vis the priority accorded to Operations. Do not sacrifice everything else, including “ Learning ” citing Operational Commitment. It is only pushing the Organisation into an early grave. Support Learning Initiatives by including as many people as possible – It might cause discomfort in the immediate time frame, but it will reap rich dividends later, save a load of money and avoid loss of goodwill by preventing costly mistakes. Do not obstruct Learning initiatives thinking that this is bringing credit to other departments and is of no consequence to own growth.
What needs to be done? Accord Learning initiatives with the seriousness they merit. Just “Attendance” is not going to benefit. Respect and Honour people who are investing their valuable time to impart higher skills to the audience. They are a part of your organization and doing their bit to make the Organisation better. Avoid “Customer” and “Entitled” mindset within the Organisation – All teams need to work cohesively, loss for one is a loss for the whole. Invest Profits for upskilling , it helps in the long run by preparing people for higher roles and keeps up the motivational levels. It is the Beginning of the End if we follow the philosophy “Learning is a waste of time, our main business is Operations”.
