Transfer of learning Suresh Babu.G Assistant Professor CTE CPAS Paippad

Content Meaning of transfer of learning Definition of transfer of learning Characteristics of transfer of learning Process of transfer of learning Types of transfer of learning Forms of transfer of learning Factors affecting of transfer of learning Way for making maximum of transfer of learning

Defination Crow and Crow :- ”The carry over of habit of thinking, feeling or working of knowledge or of skills from one learning area to another is usually referred to as transfer of learning”. Peterson :- ”Transfer of learning is generalization, for it is extension of idea to a new field”. Guthrie and Powers :- ”Transfer of learning may be defined as a process of extending and applying behavior”.

Types of Tarnsfer of learning Positive Transfer of learning Negative Transfer of Learning Zero Transfer of Learning

Positive Transfer of learning A Positive transfer takes place when the leaning of a particular task facilitates the subsequent learning of another task. In other word , when learning in one situation facilities the leaning in another situation , it is positive transfer. Example ;- learning addition facilitates the learning multiplication Playing badminton helps in learning of tennis Addition ( 2+2 = 4) Multiplication ( 2x 2= 4)

Negative Transfer of learning Transfer is said to be negative when previous learning hindrance or disrupt with the learning of subsequent task . Otherwise when the learning of one task makes the learning of other task harder it is called negative transfer . Example :- the knowledge of pronunciation in malayalam interferes with the learning of pronunciation of hindi.

Zero Transfer of learning I f learning of a particular task has no effect on the learning of a subsequent task , is said to be zero transfer. Example :- knowledge of history has no effect on the learning of cycle

Forms of Transfer of learning Lateral transfer Sequential transfer Horizontal transfer Vertical transfer Bilateral transfer General transfer and Specific transfer

Lateral Transfer Learning of one kind facilitates learning of the same level in other situation or in other contexts. Example: if a child learns 12-7 = 5 and he applies it in life situation .

Sequential transfer Positive facilitation of present learning through past learning is sequential transfer of learning. Example :- Teaching of first day have relation with second day.

Horizontal Transfer Lateral and sequential transfers are called horizontal transfer of learning because the leaner stays within the same behavioural category in making the transfer

Vertical Transfer Learning at one's behavioural level facilitates learning at a higher behavioural level in vertical transfer. Example :- teaching of addition and subtraction should facilitate the subsequent solution of problems utilising these operations.

Bilateral Transfer The human body is divided into two laterals , right and left . When training imparted to one lateral automatically transfers to another lateral , we call it bilateral transfer. Example :- training of right hand writing automatically transfer to left hand Mirror drawing test is an example

General transfer and specific transfer In general transfer learning task is extended to many fields of knowledge In specific transfer learning and transfer are close or in the related field

Factors affecting transfer of learning Intelligence of students Attitude of students Study habits Method of teaching Learning material

How to make maximum active transfer ? By making suitable curriculum Proper method of teaching should be adopted Due preparation on the part of the leaner Development of desirable attitudes and ideals Due preparation on the part of teacher
