UNIT 4: POLITICAL REVOLUTION 1820- 1835
POLITICAL REVOLUTION (1820-1835) The COMPETITION in Southern Africa for resources and CONTROL over trade that started in the 1810s continued through until the 1830s. It increased during the 1820s and 1830s causing POLITICAL CONFLICT and CHANGE . By 1830s large centralised states were formed at the expense of the smaller chiefdoms. The main ones were the ZULU , NDEBELE , GAZA , and the SOTHO .
THE EAST: RISE OF THE ZULU STATE Before the DEFEAT of Mthethwa, Zulu has been a small chiefdom under their control. The use of Amabutho for POWER and PROTECTION against the Ndwadwe . Peaceful DIPLOMACY to conquer.
THE CONSOLIDATION OF THE ZULU KINGDOM Three levels of the Zulu state ( ROYAL FAMILY and LEADERS, AMABUTHO and THEIR FAMILIES , and GENRAL PEOPLE). The impact of TRADE on the RISE of the ZULU KINGDOM . IVORY and CATTLES with Portuguese at the Delagoa Bay for MANUFACTURED GOODS (Cloth & Guns). He attacked the Ndwadwe kingdom again in 1826 ruled by Zwide’s son Sikhunyana .

THE END OF SHAKA’S RULE TENSIONS and DIVISIONS within the Zulu kingdom. Shaka became more RUTHLESS to those he believed opposed him. He got many KILLED after the death of his mother (Nandi) in 1827. Others leaders united to REMOVE him from POWER . His HALF-BROTHERS (Dingane and Mhlangana ) ASSESSINATED him in 1828.
