Trends, Networks and
Critical Thinking in the
21st Century

•This course provides opportunities to discover patterns
and extract meanings from emerging trends. This will aid
in developing your critical and creative thinking skills --
essential tools for decision-making and understanding
ethics of care.

•Global trends in the 21st century are examined and are either
accepted or rejected on a sound set of criteria. You will be asked
to create and analyze scenarios that will challenge them to:
•(1) formulate their stances on issues or concerns;
•(2) propose interventions;
•(3) formulate alternative futures.
•You will, hopefully, at the end of our course realize the
interconnections between their neural connections and social
realities.

What is trend?

Vocabulary dictionary:
•A
trend is “what's hip” or popular at a certain point in time.
Oxford dictionary:
•A general direction in which something is developing or
changing.

•A
trend simply reflects what seems to be going around at
any given time. A
trend can be in any area and doesn't
only reflect fashion, pop culture and entertainment. There
can also be a
trend in the stock market to be
bullish or
bearish, depending on economic indicators, or a political
trend reflecting a nation’s current mood. Some trends are
fun, some fabulous, some appalling, but however long
they last, you can be sure there will always be a
new
trend coming along to replace the old.

Difference between trend and fad?

•The easiest way to categorize a fad is one word: short-
lived.
•Trends have a much longer lifespan than fads. In fact,
they can continue to be fashionable for years and even
decades. The primary difference between a trend and a
fad is that trends have the potential to be long-term
influencers on the market.

How long does a trend last?

•According to Laver's Law, when a trend is in fashion, it is
'smart.' One year before this it is 'daring.' And 20 years
later, it becomes 'ridiculous.' 50 years, Laver said, was
how long it took for a trend to begin to creep back into
style.

What is an example of a fad?
