Evaluate the Designs
•What stands out most when you first look at the designs?
•Does the design have a clear concept?
•How does the artist use the elements of art and principles of
design to lead the eye?
•How does the artist use color to add to the feeling of the
design?
•Who is the target audience for these designs? Does the design
appeal to that audience?
•How does the presentation of the shirt make it more
appealing?
•Does the design look high quality?
•Could the artist do anything to make this design more
successful?
•Which is your favorite? Why? Objective: Students will
create a t-shirt design that
communicates an idea,
theme or emotion.
Will evaluate the
designs using this
table in your
notes form.
Your Turn
You have five minutes.
Go to threadless.com
and find your favorite
design. Put your design
up on your screen and
we will all look at them.
Objective: Students will
create a t-shirt design that
communicates an idea,
theme or emotion.
Steps to Designing Your Own Shirt
•Step 1: Come up with an idea.
Your idea could be an
illustration or a slogan.
•Step 2: Complete some thumbnail
sketch ideas of your design, until
you come up with one you like.
•Step 3: Create your design in
Adobe Photoshop or Adobe
Illustrator.
•Step 4: Create a presentation for
your design.
•Step 5: Turn your final design into
the dropbox.
•Step 7: Critique.
Step 1
•Come up with an
idea. Your idea
could be an
illustration or a
slogan.
In your notes please
write down a
minimum of three
ideas.
For example:
1.I want to do a shirt
design for kids that
represents the
slogan “3
Caballeros”
2.I want to do a
design for the
quote, “Life is a
Bowl of Cherries.”
3.I want to do an
illustration of the
city.
Step 2
•Complete some
thumbnail
sketch ideas of
your design,
until you come
up with one you
like.
In your notes please
complete four thumbnail
sketches of design ideas for
your t-shirts.
Step 3
Create your design in
Adobe Photoshop or
Adobe Illustrator.
Your design must be:
•A minimum of 150 dpi at
the size it will be printed
•No more than 8 spot colors
•No larger than 15" x 20"
You will need to choose
which program will work
better for your design.
Step 4
Save your original
file!
Then copy your
artwork to one of
tee templates
located in the
assignments folder.
You can add to
your design to
make your
presentation more
interesting
You can either choose a template of a t-
shirt in Illustrator or Photoshop.
Or you can put it on an actual photo of a
person in a shirt.
Think about how you can creatively present
your shirts like the ones you saw earlier in
the presentation.
Step 5
Save your final
file as a jpg and
turn it into the
drop box.
BE PREPARED TO
CRITIQUE THE
ARTWORK IN
CLASS.
