Turn-Taking & Phatic Communication ELC650

Turn-taking In a group discussion, it is important to make sure that talkative member/s do not dominate the discussion. Otherwise, quieter individuals will have less or no chance to express their ideas. Everyone should be given equal opportunity to take turn. Turn taking is a cyclical process.  It begins with one person speaking, and continues as the speaker gives up control to the next person.

Use appropriate turn-taking strategies

Use appropriate interrupting strategies

Phatic Communication Also knows as “small talk” It is an informal type of  discourse  that does not cover any functional topics of conversation or any transactions that need to be addressed. Mainly used to start a conversation with another person in a form of a greeting before slowly slip into the topic/purpose of conversation. Considered as social skill.

Phatic Communication At the beginning of a conversation When the talkers do not know each other, it allows them to show that they have friendly intentions and desire some sort of positive interaction. In a business meeting, it enables people to establish each other's reputation and level of expertise. Where there is already a relationship between the two talkers, their small talk serves as a gentle introduction before engaging in more functional topics of conversation. It allows them to signal their own mood and to sense the mood of the other person.

Phatic Communication Example Dave : Morning, Jane. Jane : Oh, morning, Dave, how are you? Dave : Fine, thanks. Have a good weekend? Jane : Yes, thanks. Catch you later. Dave : OK, see you.

Phatic Communication Topic The topics of small talk conversations are generally less important than their social function. Examples: Health Looks The weather Recent events Other mundane things related to the current situation
