Definition Counselling is a face to face relationship in which the growth takes place in the counsellor as well as the counselee. – Ruth Strong Counselling means a relation between two persons in which one person provides special assistance to the other. - Myers

Types of Counselling Directive Counselling Non – Directive Counselling Eclectic Counselling

Directive Counselling Counsellor play a vital role Client subordinate to the counsellor Focal point is the problem not the person Stress more on the person intellectual aspects then the emotional aspect Counsellor owns entire responsibility of solving problem Counsellor leads the interview

Steps of Directive Counselling Analysis – Collection of Data Synthesis – Summarising & Organizing Data Diagnosis – Interpretation of Data Prognosis – Prediction about Future Progress Counselling – Treatment Given by Counsellor Follow Up – Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Counselling

Merits of Directive Counselling Intellectual Problems can be solved easily Counsellor can see the client with more objectivity than the client himself

Demerits of Directive Counselling Client is dependent Fails in saving the client to commit the mistake in future Emotional problem may be better solved by non directive counselling

Non – Directive Counselling It revolves around the client Client leads the conversation Counsellor is most passive Open ended questions are asked The entire responsibility is of client Client can act with his own intellect Diagnostic instruments are not used

Steps of Non – Directive Counselling Defining the problematic situation Free expression of feeling Classification of positive & negative feeling Development of insight Termination of counselling situation

Merits of Non – Directive Counselling Development of problem solving ability Unwanted tests can be avoided Leaves its impression for long time Reduce tension

Demerits of Non – Directive Counselling Slow & Time consuming process If client is immature it is not suitable Sometimes due to the counsellors passiveness, the client hesitates in expressing his feeling

Eclectic Counselling Coordinative methods are used The counsellor is neither active nor passive The need and personality of the client is studied and then he selects the techniques The main techniques are used for the reassurance, giving information, case history & testing Both counsellor & client are active and cooperative in conversation turn wise and solve the problem

Steps of Eclectic Counselling Study the need and personality of the client Selection of technique Application of the technique Evaluation of activeness Preparation of counselling Seeking the opinion of the client and other related people

Merits of Eclectic Counselling Practical value is high Both Client & Counsellor are active

Demerits of Eclectic Counselling Some people are of view the both types can not be mixed together Vague & Opportunistic Question arrives that how much freedom should be given to the client No definite rule
