Types of Photography Jacquelyne Maycock

What is Fashion Photography Unlike commercial photography, the emphasis in fashion photography does not lie on just accessories or clothing, but on the mood and styling of the image. The products merely help to convey a certain lifestyle. Therefore, the whole image is much more complex. You rarely see plain white or off-white backgrounds in fashion photography and the models are usually styled very dramatically with thick eyeliners, dramatic eye shadows, or anything to make them bold. With the increased complexity in styling also comes an increased complexity in lighting to make the image look more dramatic. While many commercial photographers only stick with one light for the model, fashion photographers tend to use a wide array of lights and lighting accessories. When doing a fashion shoot, photographers can use ten or more lights for fashion. A dramatic look can also be achieved with only one light, such as a beauty dish or an octabank, it’s all about the effect of the lighting and not about how many lights you use to get that effect.

Where can Fashion Photography be found? Fashion Photography is most often conducted for magazines such as Vogue or Cosmopolitan, it can also be found on advertisements such as billboards. Over time Fashion Photography has developed to the accessories or the location being the aesthetics in which the fashion is enhanced.

comparing past and present magazines. In comparison to the 2015 magazine covers from both Vogue and Elle, both 1950/60 magazine covers are full of bright colours. The models are also more dignified than the 2015 by the use of clothing and amount of clothing worn. The 2015 edition uses more black, grey and white to show the modern society. Also, there are more tag lines on the recent editions.

Techniques Fashion Photographers use A technique used by fashion photographers is develop lighting, they have to learn how to use diffused sunlight, backlighting and backlighting using reflectors. Another technique is to be able to use photoshop to make fashion fantasy a reality. Not all photos finish where they start, there is a lot of development made to increase the realism. Painting with lighting effects is another technique used by fashion photographers, they can light up models or dull them down with the use of painting lighting. Getting inspired by everything surrounding you is a very important part of being a fashion photographer. The general surroundings, sights, smells, sounds can influence and inspire the photographer for their next fashion shoot. Learning the technique of props, backgrounds, shooting on location and when, why and how to use these options in the right proportions.

Portrait photography Portrait photography is primarily a photo of a person or a group that displays an expression, personality, and mood of the person. The face of the subject is usually the focus of the photograph, although the entire body and the background or context may be included. Portrait photography comes in many forms, amateur and professional. Professional portrait photography is images we see on magazine covers, advertisements, billboards etc, these images are taken by professional photographers. Amateur photography is images taken by an individual for example a ‘selfie’ portrait.

Where do we see portrait photography You see portrait images in: Fashion Advertising Social media (selfies) Art (galleries) Photo journalism An example of a portrait photographer is David Bailey, his portraits photographs are of celebrities for photo journalism

Portrait Photography techniques In Portrait Photography a photographer will use long lenses for close ups find angles which aren’t eye level use off camera flash use back light look out for silhouettes, reflections and shadows

Landscape Photography Landscape photography is a space that is photographed in the wide view and often have little to no people in this type of photography. If there are people in the photograph, they are there to show the scale of the landscape. Most Landscape photography we have is of nature and all things natural including beaches, green grass flatlands, mountains, active volcanos and other natural features.

Where is Landscape photography used? Landscape photography is mainly seen in travel pieces like magazines, books etc. Some scientific and geographic media also use landscape photography. An example of where landscape photography can be seen is in the National Geographic magazines.

Techniques used in Landscape photography Natural lighting and positioning is used to take the most realistic and natural Landscape photographs. The photographer Zooms out to use the maximum area thats available to shoot at For the best landscape photographs, photographers use the wide angle lens for positioning and available areas. Using a large depth of field helps to get as much in focus as possible

Photojournalism The objective of a photojournalist is to be a visual storyteller. By photographing and editing images in a way that the media wouldn’t be able to. Photojournalists work locally or travel abroad to document current events. The pictures that are taken by photojournalists more than often be in newspapers or other media formats and would be used by tv news outlets who would pay the photographer, without having to send anyone from their company out to these places. Images used are sometimes shocking and explicit due to their raw nature.

Where do we see photojournalism This image is a present example of a photojournalism image in the media. A high quality image with lots of colour of a soldier severely hurt in war. This image was placed on the BBC News page to describe the tragedy in war.

Photojournalism techniques Some of the most important things to think about while taking photographs with the intended purpose of photojournalism would be: The timing has to be perfect in order to capture the right moment and the right emotion from the subject. Another technique would be exposure, the longer the shutter is open the more light is available making the image brighter and showing off the darkness. If the shutter is used quickly, less light gets in making the image darker and the emotion of the image to be morbid.
