Types of solutions –Homogeneous Colloidal-Emulsion Prepared by: Fanar Fawaz University of Zakho Faculty of Science Department of Chemistry 1

Outline : Homogeneous Solution & Properties Colloidal solution & Properties Types of colloidal What is Emulsion ? Types of Emulsion What is the use of Emulsifying agent ? 2

A mixture in which its components are uniformly distributed throughout its volume and cannot be seen separately is called a homogenous mixture . Homogeneous Solution 3

Properties of homogeneous solution They are totally transparent, even if they are colored. They go unchanged through a paper filter or a porous membrane. Consist of a single phase They look uniform with the naked eye 4

A colloid is a mixture in which one substance consisting of microscopically dispersed insoluble particles is suspended throughout another substance. Colloidal solution 5

Properties of colloidal It is a heterogeneous mixture. The size of colloidal particles is very small. Their particle size ranges between 1-1000 nanometers.  It shows the Tyndall effect. They don’t settle down when left undisturbed for some time. They cannot be separated by the filtration process.  6

Type of colloidal Dispersed phase Dispersed medium Example Foam Gas Liquid Whipped cream Solid Aerosol Solid Liquid Smoke ,dust Liquid aerosol Liquid Gas Fog ,Clouds Emulsion Liquid Liquid Milk, Mayonnaise Types of colloidal 7

What is Emulsion ? An emulsion is a mixture of two liquids that are normally immiscible owing to liquid-liquid phase separation. . 8

Types of Emulsion Oil in water (O/W) Water in Oil (W/O) 9

What is the use of Emulsifying agent ? An emulsifier is a substance that stabilizes emulsions. They are substances which have a hydrophilic end (polar) as well as a hydrophobic end (non-polar). They are soluble in both water and oil. If the emulsifier is more soluble in water then the water becomes the dispersion medium and oil becomes the dispersed phase and hence we get oil in water emulsion. if the emulsifier is more soluble in oil, then oil becomes the dispersion medium and water becomes the dispersed phase. 10
