REVIEW What are the 3 types of speeches according to purpose?
MANUSCRIPT SPEECH
Definition Manuscript Speech A type of speech where the speaker reads word-for-word from a prepared text. Used when accuracy, exact wording, and formality are necessary.
Examples of where it’s used: News broadcasting Presidential speeches Legal statements Formal academic ceremonies
PURPOSE AND IMPORTANCE
Why use a manuscript speech? Ensures accuracy and avoids misinformation. Maintains formality and professionalism. Helps convey technical or sensitive information exactly as written.
However: May sound less natural if read mechanically. Eye contact with the audience may be limited. Tip: Balance reading with natural gestures and occasional eye contact.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Advantages Disadvantages Accuracy and precision Less spontaneous Ideal for formal events Limited audience connection Prevents misinterpretation May sound monotone
REAL-LIFE EXAMPLES
Watch & Analyze Watch a short clip of a news broadcast.
Questions: What tone and pacing did the speaker use? Did the delivery sound natural or too formal? How did the speaker keep the audience engaged even while reading?
GROUP TASK
Task: “Press Briefing Simulation” Each row acts as a Press Team . Every group reads a short paragraph from a prepared manuscript titled ‘Youth and Media Awareness’ . Focus on: Voice projection – 20% Clear pronunciation – 20% Proper pacing – 10% Total – 50%
Manuscript speech uses a written text read word-for-word. It’s important in formal, precise, and professional settings. The challenge is maintaining engagement and tone while reading.
Find a short newspaper article (5–6 sentences). Practice reading it aloud at home as if you were a news anchor. Be ready to demonstrate in the next class.
