Many psychological studies, such as Baumrind (1971) which shows the various parenting styles can
correlate with various teachers' classroom styles in the sense that a good model of a parent is an
appropriate model for teacher. According to the study, the crucial elements of relationships are the
responsiveness and demandingness. Considering these elements teachers can be classified as
authoritative, intimate, and indifferent. Authoritative teachers will be characterized by a high
response, and a high demand, and are considered to be the closest to the ideal picture of a teacher.
Most of them can be described with personality traits such as: curious, creative, attentive, principled,
astute, patient, hardworking, gregarious, communicative, and openhearted and perhaps the most
important, proficient. They are eager to know something more about the student apart from their
first and last name, something more about their individuality, more personal. They are more likely to
build a good relationship with the students and will allow them participation in the class, as long as
it is something relevant to the topic of the lesson, so the student involvement in the class is at a very

3. Interview With Teachers
I asked Mrs. Barkley if she worked with other teachers to plan and jointly facilitate learning; she
told me that she personally does not. She said that she never combines classes or teaches with
another teacher in the same classroom. She said the only thing that the teachers do together is come
together in meetings and discuss progress of their classes and test scores. This came as a shock to
me, I thought that teachers would be meeting often to combine curriculum in a way that's

Barkley definitely took on a leadership role at the high school. When other teachers at Glencoe
heard that I was observing Mrs. Barkley they all told me that she was an incredible teacher. She was
a teacher that the rest of them looked up too. I even heard people say she should be the teacher of
the year. So Mrs. Barkley is definitely a leader with other teachers. Not only is Mrs. Barkley a leader
with other teachers, but she is also an incredible leader and facilitator in the classroom. I observed
her ninth grade biology class, that was supposed to have students with disciplinary and learning
problems, and her sweet kind–hearted nature (with a little strictness) took control of her classroom.
She was able to get the most struggling kids to get involved in classroom discussion. Mrs. Barkley
would ask questions to kids who were not paying attention, or who were falling asleep, and they

For this assignment we had to interview a teacher. The teacher I chose was Mrs. Gilbert. She is a
special education counselor and algebra teacher. She has been a huge influence on my life. I can not
wait to share the things I have learned from her in this interview. First question was what made you
a teacher? She started to explain that in Sophomore year of high school she was signed up as a peer
helper tutor which means she help special needs children with their homework. According to Mrs.

Teacher Interview While attending South Elementary School in Marshall, Illinois, I have learned a
lot about the daily life of working within a school from interviewing two different teachers. I have
never realized how much work goes into being a teacher no matter the grade being taught. I am so

Mrs. Reynolds' mom reminded her of the many benefits of becoming a teacher including having

second place I observed was at Montebello Elementary School located in Suffern, New York. The
students were in both fourth and fifth grades, the reason was because it was an inclusion class. When
you walk into the classroom is it inviting. They had objects labeled, moveable furniture, and storage
for each child. Throughout the time I observed, they moved the furniture many times,
accommodating to each subject. It helped separate students for independent study as well as

in teacher competencies. You also need at least 3 years with teaching in Oregon schools

Some of the teachers were stricter about handling this than others, but they were all still effective.
Both Mrs. Kraus and Mrs. Pollard had songs for a lot of their transitions and Mrs. Pollard had a
"Sparkle Master" to reward good behavior and give the students a chance to stand out in class. It
was a special way to get them involved with singing to their classmates individually.
Mrs. Kraus had a process with the younger kids for continuity. She started with a hello song of some
sort and then had them sing their school song and patriotic songs. Those were the kids' warm ups.
After those, she went right into the lessons. She did not always introduce the concept, but she
explained what the kids were going to do that day. Mrs. Pollard was the only one who used the Orff
instruments at my observations, so whenever she had the kids go to the Orff instruments, she called
each row to line up at the Orff instruments and told them to be careful and not hit them. The children
already knew how they were supposed to go to the Orff instruments because she had already made
rules on how they act around them. When they left the Orff instruments she called each row to stand
up and walk single file out of the rows of instruments.

Collaboration between teachers is a key component to professional development that will lead to
higher student achievement. There is a need for schools to set up time for teachers to be able to
collaborate together. This allows for teachers to help each other, matchup content, teach each other
new and best practices, troubleshoot student issues just to name a few of the areas that collaboration
time can help foster within a school. The key is to build time for teachers to be able to collaborate
during the school day or week. This collaboration time needs to be between grade levels,
departments, and cross curricular when needed. For many schools this is an afterthought to the
school schedule or a fleeting thought after the master schedule is completed. A principal needs to
keep an open mind to any strategy that will enable the teachers to be able to collaborate for the good
of the students and the school.
Currently at Wahlert, collaboration time has been built into the schedule to two ways, though the
amount of time and who is available are not always the most convenient. The first block of time is
