KINSHIP, marriage and household are important concepts in the study of society KINSHIP Is a social institution that refers to relations formed between members of society. ★ different forms of socially accepted relation among people developed through blood or consanguineal relationship, marriage of affinal relationship, adoption and other culturally accepted rituals.

KINSHIP by blood CONSANGUINEAL KINSHIP- or kinship by blood is considered as the most basic and general form of relations. DESCENT- refers to biological relationship. - it recognized that children descent from parents and that there exists a biological relationship between parents and their offspring.. LINEAGE- refers to the line where one’s descent is traced. - it can be traced by studying either the person’s paternal or maternal line or both the father’s and the mother’s line.
Unilineal descent DESCENT- usually traced by most societies through a single line of ancestors from either the male and female line. * Descent line are recognized only through the relatives of either the male or female member. BASIC FORMS OF UNILINEAL DESCENT A. PATRILINEAL- both males and females belong to the kin group of their father but they fo not belong to their mothers kin group. It includes his offspring and his children’s offspring only.
B. MATRILINEAL- traced through the female line. Person are related if they can traced their descent through females to the same women ancestor. DOUBLE UNILINEAL DESCENT The child at birth is assigned to the mother’s group or father’s group for specific purposes. BILATERAL DESCENT Kinship is traced both ancestral lines of mother and the father. Nonunilineal or cognatic descent principle.
KINSHIP BY MARRIAGE Or affinal Kinship refers to the type of reactions developed when marriage occurs husband forms new relations with his wife and with his wifes family. wife’s also develops new relations with her husband and with her husband’s family. families of both the husband and wife also from new social relations with each other.
MARRIAGE - is an important social institution where in two person’s, a man and a woman, enter into a family life. - the partners make a public, and permanent declaration of their union as lifetime couples.
MARRIAGE ACROSS CULTURE - different societies have different sets of cultural practices, norms, and rules to marriage culture ACROSS societies have developed tradition, custom, rules and norms that determine how marriage will be done.
A. ENDOGAMY - or compulsory marriage , in their own village, community, ethnic, social, or religion groups. - Members of societies who don’t follow or who disobey the endogamous rules or marriage are sometimes penalized mildly, through other many receive more saver sanctions like death or ostracism.
B.Exogamy - or out marriage refers to a marriage customs where an individual is required by society, norms and rules to many outside of their own group, community or social classes. - it permanent incest or marriage within one’s who family and clan.
C. MONOGAMY - monogamy came from Greek words “ monos ” and “ gamos ” which literally mean “ one union”. - it refers to the marriage or sexual partnering customs or practice where an individual has “ only one male or female partner or mate”
D. Polygamy - refers to the practice of having more than one partner or sexual mate. ★ POLYGYNY- a man has multiple female partner or mates. ★ polyandry- a women has multiple male partner and mates.
Referred marriage - In our society today, finding a partner can be done differently. Some find their partner Ms through other people like friends and relatives who act a matchmaker. - these matchmaker help their single friends or relatives to find their possible husband or wife by referring them to another man or woman who is also interested in finding life partner.
Arrange marriage - Or fix marriage - the man or woman’s parents, community leader, religious officials or leaders determine the material partner of the individual. - this was done to ensure that the young man and woman will marry to the most appropriate person according to the dictates and rules set by the family, community or religious group.
TYPES OF ARRANGE MARRIAGE - CHILD MARRIAGE -EXCHANGE MARRIAGE - DIPLOMATIC MARRIAGE - MODERN ARRANGE MARRIAGE -CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE
Child marriage - if happens when parents arrange for the marriage of their child long before the marriage takes place. - the marriage will be consummated in the future.
Exchange marriage there is reciprocal exchange of spouses between two countries, tribes or group .
Diplomatic marriage -occurs when arranged marriage has been established between two royal or political families in order to forge political or diplomatic alliances.
MODERN ARRANGE MARRIAGE -THE CHILDS PARENTSZ WHICH THE CONSENT OF THE CHILD, CHOOSE FROM SEVERAL POSSIBLE MATES. - THE PARENTS ORGANIZED MEETING WITH THE POTENTIAL PARTNER OF THEIR CHILD. THE TWO CHILDREN WILL THEN BE GIVEN A SHORT TIME TO GET TO KNOW EACH OTHER, AFTER WHICH THE CHILD WILL CHOOSE WHOM HE OR SHE WILL MARRY.
Christian marriage is the union between a man and a woman, instituted a ordained by god as lifelong relationship between one man as husband and one woman as wife.
