Types of Social Stratification and their Characteristics 🏛️ System 📖 Definition 💡 Characteristics Open System A type of social stratification that allows individuals to move up or down the social hierarchy based on their abilities, efforts, and achievements. • Social mobility is possible.• Status is earned (achieved status).• Hard work and education can change one’s class.• Found in modern, democratic societies. Closed System A rigid system where a person’s social status is determined by birth and cannot be easily changed. • No social mobility.• Status is ascribed (given at birth).• Occupations and social roles are inherited.• Common in traditional or caste societies. Ethnic System A system where social ranking is based on ethnicity, race, or cultural background. • Membership is fixed by birth.• Ethnic identity affects access to resources.• Can lead to discrimination or inequality.• Seen in diverse or colonized societies.

People interact more freely with those people belonging to the same ethnic category. During the Spanish and American colonial systems in the Philippines, the colonizers perceived themselves to be occupying the upper social class than the Filipinos or the natives whom they called as Indios
