Language Conventions test.
What Is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN stands for ‘The National Assessment
Program – Literacy and Numeracy’. NAPLAN is a
standardised test that all students in years 3, 5 and
7 sit.
A standardised test means a test which is the same
for everyone. There are literacy tests and numeracy
tests and they are diagnostic. A diagnostic test
means a test which assesses students on their prior
knowledge and what they can already do.
Why Must We Sit the
NAPLAN Test?
NAPLAN provides your teacher and
school with information about what
skills you have. It tells your teacher
which essential skills you already
have and which skills you need to
develop.
NAPLAN also provides your school
with important information about the
academic abilities of its students so
that they can make decisions about
what is taught at school and why.
NAPLAN is also used to compare
information with other schools and
look for patterns and similarities.
Before NAPLAN
Before you even begin to think about NAPLAN, it is
important that you do not let this test worry you.
Sometimes your teacher or your parents might talk
about it. It is not important that you get a high
score. Although it is easy to become anxious about
NAPLAN, it is important that you do your best to
remember what you already know. NAPLAN is only
a set of tests and does not define you as a person.
Your teacher and family will be proud of you, no
matter what the outcome is.
During NAPLAN, it is a good idea to do activities
that relax you and make you happy. You could play
your favourite sport, read a great book or spend
time with supportive friends.
Preparing for NAPLAN
It is a good idea to be as prepared as you can be for NAPLAN. Your
teacher might help you do this by showing you practice NAPLAN
tests. The reason for this is to familiarise you with the format of a
NAPLAN test and prepare you for questions that you might face in
the test. This may help you feel more comfortable with sitting the
test. It is important to remember that the question styles are only
similar to the actual test.
