Unemployment In South Africa An Economics and Management Science Grade 8 learning Resource This presentation aims to assist the grade 8 learners in understanding the issue pertaining unemployment in South Africa, linking it to their day-to-day live experiences.
What is unemployment? Unemployment can be understood as a state in which individuals are willing, able and actively searching for employment, but are unable to find a job ( Thalil , n.d.)
What are the three main types of unemployment ? - FRICTIONAL UNEMPLOYMENT -SEASONAL UNEMPLOYMENT -STRUCTURAL UNEMPLOYMENT
F RICTIONAL Frictional unemployment occurs when individuals transition between jobs (moving out of old jobs to new jobs) in the labour market ( Thalil , n.d ) S EASONAL Seasonal unemployment occurs when a seasonal job ends, reducing a demand for certain seasonal jobs. These types of jobs usually comes and goes at certain times of the year, either during holiday season or due to weather changes ( Debuque , n.d.) S TRUCTURAL Structural unemployment occurs when there is a mismatch between the skills that individuals posses and the skills that are required for available jobs, or a geographic mismatch , between where individuals lives and where available jobs are located ( Thalil , n.d )

Continuation……. High Unemployment Rate Reported In South Africa!
Concerns raised regarding youth unemployed in South Africa ! 4 out of 10 young South Africans cannot find employment. In comparison, unexperienced unemployed youth outperforms experienced unemployment youth Stats have proved that the unemployment rate has risen to 45,5% among young individuals aged 18-34 years. Less initiatives such as vocational training, apprenticeship and learnerships are conducted to address the scourge of youth unemployment
Solutions to reduce unemployment Fostering entrepreneurship and self-employment : Individuals who would like to start their own businesses should be given assistance and support as they may lack professional knowledge. For example: Thabo, a young man from Letlhabile would like to start his own business. However he is faced with mentoring and financial challenges, forcing him to seek help from aspiring entrepreneurs in his neighbouring communities ( Shivamchowdhary , n.d.) Enhancing skill development : Individuals should have access to job training, where they can learn and acquire certain skills necessary for their desired work. For example: Lesedi wants to work as an electronic engineer, however she is fresh from university with no working experience. Therefore, ensuring that there is easy access to vocational training and apprenticeships could assist individuals in equipping themselves with the necessary practical skills needed to get them hired easily (Mahanta, n.d.)
Continuation…. Investing in infrastructure: Investing in infrastructure such as roads, water and energy can create job opportunities and stimulate economic growth of the country. Not only does it improve the economic state of the country, but it also results in an increase in demand for labour in different sectors. For example, the roads in Auckland Park were in a terrible condition, with many potholes, but soon there was a tender to employ locals to fix and maintain those roads, thus creating employment ( Debuque , n.d.)
How can youth in your community create jobs?
