Union and Intersection of Sets

Union of Sets The union of sets A and B, denoted by A ⋃ B, is the set containing all elements that are in A, or in B, or in both A and B. Venn Diagram Example: A = {2, 3, 4, 5} B = {3, 5, 6} A ⋃ B = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6} 2 4 6 3 5 A B

Intersection of Sets The intersection of sets A and B, denoted by A ⋂ B, is the set containing all elements that are in both A and B. Venn Diagram Example: A = {1, 3, 4, 6, 8} B = {2, 3, 4, 6, 10} A ⋂ B = {3, 4, 6} 1 8 2 3 6 A B 4 10

Union and Intersection of Sets ⋂ The word "or" suggests union while the word "and" means intersection. "or" ⋃ nion i tersection "and"

EXAMPLES: 1. Let M = {b, e, a, u, t, y} and N = {b, r, a, i , n}. What is M ⋃ N? What is M ⋂ N? Illustrate using a Venn Diagram. EXAMPLES: 3. If R = {positive even numbers less than 24} and S = {factors of 24}, then what is R ⋂ S? What is the cardinality of R ⋂ S?
