There are different kinds of adventure sports like mountaineering,river rafting,paragliding,hot air ballooning,scuba diving etc. Adventure sports give us courage fight difficult situations and also help us to build our confidence.

Mountainering is a tough sport as one has to walk over rivers and steep paths. Sangeetha Arora , a teacher of Kendriya Vidyalaya has written about her real experiences at the mountaineering camp in this chapter. Brigadier Gyan Singh was the Director of their adventure course. Sangeeta was made the leader of group 7. When the people are trained for mountaineering ,the people are divided into groups and one leader is apponted for each group.

Resposibilities of a Group Leader Help others in carrying their bags Let the group go ahead and keep to the last. Help those who cannot climb properly. Find a good place to stop and rest. Look after those who are not well. Arrange for food for the group. Take responsibility of group members actions.

What's in the rucksacks? The mountaineers take thr things they need in their rucksacks like food packets,water bottle,rope,hook,plastic sheet diary, torch, towel, soap,whistle,glucose,jaggery,chana etc. The mountaineers take Vitamin C, iron tablets and hot choclate milk in their braekfast. These give them strength and help them to keep warm in extreme cold.

Mountaineering Equipments

How do the mountaineers cross a river? A thick rope tied across the river, from one bank to the other. The rope was tightly fixed to pegs or ‘pitons’ on both the sides. The mountaineers ties a rope around their waist and put a sling (type of hook) in it. They then put the sling on the thick rope tied across the river .

How to climb steep mountains? They first obsrve the rocks carefully to identify holds - places where they can put their hands and feet. While climbing the steep mountains mountaineers should keep their body at an angle of 90 degree and back straight. Rapling is the special way of coming down using the rope. How do the mountaineers walk on the snow? They walk carefully on the snow with the help of sticks .

The sleeping bags The sleeping bags of the mountaineers is filled with soft feathers which help them in keeping warm. How do the mountaineers make food in mountains? They collect firewood and stones to make a chulha and cook their food.

The tents of mountaineers. A double layered plastic sheets are used to put up tent. The air between the layers helps to keep mountaineers warm. A drain is dug around the tent to keep off insects and reptiles. How do the lost members find their group? When the members of any group get lost from the other members of the group, they whistle loudly and flash their torch.
