Uses and Gratification Theory Pulp Fiction/Fight Club Omar Rasoul
Entertainment The entertainment in Pulp Fiction lies in the fact that the film is a smelting pot of genres mixing together genres such as crime, drama, action and comedy and additionally upon rewatch us as the viewers are able to pick up new things that reveal themselves after the initial viewing in hindsight. In respects to Fight Club the same applies through the hidden messaging that can be seen after first viewing and through the melting of multiple genres in this case action, dark comedy and crime the audience appeal is broadened.
Information/Education Both of these films more so act as mouth pieces for a message the director aims to get across to the audience. In Pulp Fiction the director aims to make a commentary on redemption through various characters in the film whilst simultaneously paying homage to the history of cinema with some of the visual call backs present to older films and educating the audience on cinema through this. Similarly Fight Club has a similar way in which it aims to inform and educate the audience in this specific film this is regarding the films critique of American consumer culture, corporate working life and its slave like labour working the common man to death and debt whilst those at the top prosper and increase in wealth and how this system will inevitably lead to societal breakdown and radicalization of those at the bottom of the societal barrel.
Personal Identification Although objective I believe that audiences in the case of both of these films audiences do in some ways personally identify with the media. With Pulp Fiction this is done entertainingly through how these very out there and dangerous characters have mundane every day conversations that regular people have which grounds them for the audience and makes personal identification with them easy. In Fight Club this is done through the main character a 9 to 5 worker pushed to the brink in a soul draining corporate system, stuck in the consumer/shopaholic cycle and feeling overlooked by society whilst struggling to process his emotions in life all issues that are faced by most humans alive.
Social Interaction As with all films naturally these two films also create social interaction regarding the film with friends, family and others on what they have just seen and especially with the nature of these films upon rewatch and analysis more is discovered and talked about with and specifically these two films being cult classics and having active fan bases to this day the discussion and social interaction continues.
Conclusion In conclusion these films as I have covered are actively enjoyed by many viewers like me and others and falls in line with the uses and gratifications theory showing how we as audiences gravitate to certain pieces of media for many different reasons such as seeing ourselves in the media amongst other things.
