IRIS

EMBRYOLOGY and
DEVELOPMENT OF IRIS

Iris development depend on closure of embryonic fissure
which occur usually onD33-35. 6th
wk-AC boundaries forme by cornea and tunica vasculosa
lentis, with pupillary membrane tunica vasculosa lentis
form iris stroma, infiltrated by long post and ant cilliary
arteries by3 -4month. 5th
month-Pupillary membrane remodel itself and central
pupill get absorb by 6 th month forming pupil

ANATOMY OF IRIS

The iris epithelium is bilayered, with cell lying base to
base.
The ant layer of iris epithelium continuous with the outer
pigment layer of ciliary epithelium lack in melanocyte
while post epithelium is heavily pigmented..
The post epithelium is closely related to muscular
process of dilator muscle.
The pigmented post epithelium will extend anteriorly a
short distance to ruff but any further excursion cause
ectropian uveae

VENOUS SUPPLY
Small vein drain blood from iris, cilliary, body, choroid
join to form vortex vein-4in no(ST,IT,SN,IN) they
pierce sclera and drain into sup and inf ophthalmic
vein in turn drain into cavernous sinus

Nerve supply of cilliary and iris

Parasymathetic nerve-cilliary
muscle and sphincter pupillary.
Long cilliary nerve -carry sensory
branch from nasociliary(5th nerve
opthalmic divison) and sympathe
fibre to supply dilator pupillae

Embryology of cilliary body

Cilliary body derived -neuroectoderm and
mesenchyme.
Cilliary epithelium-form from ant edge of optic
cup,@ 3monthvof gestation epithelium give folds
forming cilliary process.
Cilliary stroma-form from mesenchyme lying
between cup and cornea with primitive muscle
visible at3 month.
At4 month primitive scleral spur developwhich is
not fully formed untill 1st yr of life.

Cilliary epithelium
●Bilayered( Inner layer pigmented while outer layer
rich in Golgi and ER).
The two cell layer lies ex to apex ,the basement
membrane of inner layer continue with ILM of
retina whereas as basement membrane of outer
layer with that of retinal pigment epithelium.
Cilliary epithelium forms integral part of blood
aqueous barrier

Microscopic structure of chorroid

CHORIOCAPILLARY and BRUCHS MEMBRANE
Choroidal capillaries lined by continuous layer of fenestrated endothelial
cell found to be most dense at macula ( infact during CRAO) blood flow in
these capillary make the macula glow and appear as characteristics foveal
cherry red spot?????? ). BRUCHS MEMBRANE -innermoat choroidal layer
consist of 5 layer structure (basement membrane of capillary endothelium,
meshwork of elastic fibresandwich between bilayer collagen and basement
membrane of retinal pigment epithelium .
FUNCTION as blood retinal barrier
