Various Dance
Forms
Dance forms are broad,
dynamic, and difficult to
classify due to overlapping
styles.
Dance is not limited to
interpretative dance, folk
dance, social dance,
mixers, and creative dance.
forms other than folk dance
Studying dance disciplines
based on specific criteria is
important, especially for
beginners.
Globalization and advanced
mass media contribute to the
borrowing and blending of
dances from different
cultures.
forms other than folk dance
New dance forms are being
created from mixtures of various
national styles. Dance styles will
continue to evolve. Many
traditional dances are lost due to
lack of preservation methods.
Some old dances are still
performed but their meanings
have changed due to cultural
development.
How can we preserve
our dances?
Modern technology like film,
videotape, and dance notation
systems (e.g., Aquinotation,
Andinotation, Labanotation,
Effort/Shape, and Benesh
Notation) helps preserve
dances for future generations.
How can we preserve
our dances?

codified theatrical dance school known
as danse d’école. Originated in France,
evolving from European court spectacles
that mixed verse, story, music, and dance.
Ballet
The word ballet comes from:
Spanish bailar meaning "to dance"
Italian balletto meaning "dance"
Began in Italian and French courts during the
Renaissance. Became a standard dance form in the
17th century. Ballet terms are in French due to its
French origins.
Ballet in the Philippines
Introduced during the American Period.
First performed in the Philippines by
Paul Nijinsky of the Imperial Russian
Ballet in 1915.
Kay Williams opened a ballet school in

THEATRICAL DANCEalso known as concert dance or
performance dance, encompasses dance
forms presented on a stage or similar
venue for an audience. It is characterized
by its focus on choreographed
movement, often set to music, and
typically involves elaborate costumes,
sets, and lighting.
20th-century social, popular, ballet, and
modern dance influenced the
development of dance in motion pictures
and musicals.
THEATRICAL DANCE
In the 1920s–1930s, bodabil shows in Manila
became popular and often imitated Hollywood
acts.
These shows evolved into the Filipino bodabil
stage, later influencing musical numbers in Filipino
films (1950s–60s).
Dance also gained prominence on Philippine
television shows like:
Dance Time with Chito
Penthouse Live
Eezy Dancing
Keep on Dancing
Classical DanceDrama, music, and dance are deeply connected in
Asian classical dance traditions.
Asian classical dances often use:
Symbolic hand gestures (e.g., mudras in India)
Masks and elaborate makeup

Classical Dance

legends, especially from epic tales like the Ramayana and
Mahabharata.
Performances can lst for hours and were traditionally performed
only for royalty or special guests.
Classical Dance
Dancers undergo months of training in traditional arts such as:
Dance
Singing
Acting
Music-making
Performances require:
Sets, costumes, makeup
Musical ensemble
A special stage or performance area (sometimes built specifically or
held in temples and courts)

China
The Peking Opera is the most famous form of Chinese classical dance-
drama.
Developed in the mid-19th century
Known for colorful costumes, martial arts, acrobatics, and expressive
gestures
In the 1950s, the Chinese government started promoting:
European ballet styles
Performances with modern political and social themes reflecting the
contemporary Chinese environment
Cultural DanceThe term "cultural dance" refers to dance performances
done by Filipino entertainers abroad, especially in:
Japan (entertainers known as "japayuki") Middle East,
Europe Most performers:
Have little or no formal training
May lack understanding of authentic dance styles
Rely on natural talent and stage presence
Cultural DanceBecause of this, the term "cultural dance" is considered
informal or inaccurate and should always be placed in
quotation marks.
In the Philippines, calling a folk dance (like Tinikling) a
"cultural dance" can be controversial or misleading.
It’s important not to confuse "cultural dance" with:
Folk dance – traditional dances of the people
Ethnic dance – dances specific to a cultural group
Traditional dance – dances passed down through
generations
