INTRODUCTION:-

CLASSIFICATION OF FAMILY:- BENTHAM AND HOOLER ACCORDING DIVISION :- PHANEROGAMS CLASS :- DICOTYLEDONS SUB-CLASS :- POLYPETALAE SERIES :- THALAMIFLORAE ORDER :- RANALES FAMILY :- RANUNCULACEAE

IMPORTANT GENERA:- RANUNCULUS ANEMONE CLEMATIS THALLICTRUM DELPHENIYUM ACONITUM

DISTRIBUTION:- It is commonly known as buttercup family. It includes 35 genera and 1500 species out of which 163 species are confined to India. They are chiefly found in temperate and aretic regions.

VEGETATIVE CHARECTERS:- Stem: Herbaceous, in some climbing (clematis) or underground rhizome or erect branched.

FLORAL CHARECTERS:- INFLORECENCE:- Solitary terminal (Anemone), axillary (Clematis), raceme ( Aconitum,Delphinium ) and cymose (Ranunculus spp.).

PRIMITIVE CHARECTERS:- Leaves with reticulate venation. Actinomorphic symmetry. Large number of petals. Calyx and corolla free. Gynoecium polycarpellary and apocarpous . ADVANCED CHARACTERS:- Plants are generally herbs. Leaves compound (Clematis). Stipules are absent except in Thalictrum . Unisexual flowers ( Thalictrum ). Gynoecium syncarpous ( Nigella ).

ECONOMIC IMPORTANC OF RANUNCULACEAE :-

5.

AFFINITIES OF THE FAMILY:- The family Ranunculaceae is one of the most primitive of the dicotyledons . Bentham and Hooker have placed the family in the class of very early dicotyledons . The family can be linked with Rosaceae on account of free and numerous stamens and carpels . The dimorphic leaves and hypogynous followers of Ranunculaceae trace the realationship with the family Nymphaeaceae . The family is in its close relationship with the monocotyledons due to the a following facts:- Leaf bases are broadened into sheath and rhizome formation. The course of vascular bundles and scattered arrangement in the stem of certain genera, e.g., Cimicifuga . The endospermous seed with apical small embryo and copious endosperm.

EXAMPLE OF SPECIES:- (RANUNCULUS SCLERATUS)
