What is an Accent? Accent neutralizing is more like learning dance, music sports or martial arts This involves the training of muscle groups and requires a lot of practice Accent is a characteristic pronunciation specially determined by the region/social background of the speaker There are 3 Level of English pronunciation : People often don’t understand what you want to say. You use the wrong sound in English words People understand what you want to say, but it is not that pleasant to listen to you People understand you, your communication is easy to understand and the clarity of speech is pleasant to listen to Neutralizing your accent is different from other skills such as Grammar and Vocabulary
Consonant Sounds Consonants are produced when the airstream is obstructed in the vocal tract Consonant sounds can be characterized according to three main phonetic properties: Place of Articulation Manner of A rticulation Voicing Refers to where in the mouth the sound is produced Refers to the way the air is obstructed in the mouth while producing the sound Refers to whether or not there is a vibration of the vocal cords as the sound is produced Phonetic Alphabet The phonetic alphabet is an internationally recognized set of words used to clarify the letters of the alphabet.

Introduction to Vowel Sounds Vowel A vowel is a sound in spoken language that is characterized by an open configuration of the vocal tract, in contrast to consonants, which are characterized by a constriction or closure at one or more points along the vocal tract Articulation The articulatory features that distinguish different vowels in a language are said to determine the Vowel’s quality Vowel System is determined in terms of common features like: Height (vertical dimension), Backness (horizontal dimension), Roundedness (lip position) Vowel Sound Is an OPEN sound, i.e.; it is produced by not blocking the breath with the lips, teeth, or tongue Is always voiced (VD), i.e. the vocal cords vibrate Can form a syllable by itself

Introduction to Syllable Stress Word Stress English is stress timed language Stressing a word means emphasizing a prominent syllable Only one syllable is stressed in one word Impact of a stressed syllable - Whenever a syllable is stressed, the pronunciation is: Higher in pitch Louder in volume Longer in duration Intonation and its importance Intonation is the term used to refer to the distinctive use of different patterns of pitch that carry meaningful information Pitch refers to the vibration of the vocal folds Rate of Speech Technically refers to the number of words that we speak in one minute It is very important to maintain a proper rate of speech in order to communicate in a neutral accent
