GEORGE KALFRED MASETE BACHELOR OF PHARMACY MANIFESTO FOR THE POSITION OF PRESIDENT OF THE ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE (AMR) CLUB AT VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
INTRODUCTION: Dear Members of the Antimicrobial Resistance Club, Faculty, and Fellow Students, I am George Kalfred Masete, a Year one student in Bachelor of Pharmacy at Victoria University, and I am honored to present my manifesto as I seek your support to serve as the President of the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Club.
Vision To empower our community with knowledge, drive innovative solutions, and foster a collaborative approach in the fight against antimicrobial resistance, making Victoria University a leading voice in combating this global health challenge.
Mission To lead the AMR Club with passion, commitment, and a clear focus on raising awareness, promoting research, and advocating for responsible use of antimicrobials among students, faculty, and the broader community.
1. Increase Awareness on AMR Organize seminars, workshops, and webinars featuring experts in the field to educate members on the dangers of antimicrobial resistance. Launch awareness campaigns during World Antimicrobial Awareness Week and other key dates Develop educational materials such as brochures, posters, and social media content to spread key messages about AMR prevention and control.
2. Promote Responsible Use of Antimicrobials Initiate programs that educate students on the importance of responsible antimicrobial use, prescription practices, and the role of diagnostics. Collaborate with the Faculty of Health Sciences to incorporate AMR topics into student coursework and practical sessions.
3. Foster Research and Innovation Encourage and support student-led research projects on antimicrobial resistance, with opportunities for publication and presentations at conferences. Partner with local healthcare facilities and research institutions for internships and collaborative research projects that tackle AMR.
4. Strengthen Collaboration and Partnerships Build strong ties with other student clubs, healthcare organizations, and AMR-focused initiatives to expand our outreach and impact. Establish partnerships with local and international AMR bodies to bring new insights, resources, and opportunities to our club members.
5. Advocate for Policy Change and Public Health Initiatives Engage with policymakers, healthcare professionals, and community leaders to advocate for stronger policies and practices that reduce antimicrobial resistance. Organize student forums and debates on AMR to equip members with advocacy skills and foster a culture of informed activism.
PROPOSED INITIATIVES AMR Awareness Week: A flagship event featuring a series of activities including panel discussions, awareness walks, and interactive sessions with experts. AMR Champions Program: A peer education initiative where selected students will be trained as AMR advocates to educate their peers and the community. Research Grants and Competitions: Providing small grants and organizing competitions to motivate students to explore innovative solutions to AMR.
