IDENTIFYING PROBLEMS OF CLARITY AND COHERENCE LESSON 7
Example: My sister’s baking is as good as Mom.
ILLOGICAL COMPARISON This means that the sentence suggests comparison, but the ideas compared are two unlike things.
Explanation: The ideas being compared in the given sentence are “my sister’s baking” and “Mom”. These two ideas are different from each other.
Revision: My sister’s baking is as good as Mom’s baking.
Example: Christina helped Father more than Mother with the chores.
AMBIGUOUS COMPARISON The ideas in the sentence are not clear.
Explanation: The sentence is confusing because we don’t know whether Christina helped Father more than she helped Mother or she helped Father more than Mother did.
Revision: Christina helped Father more than she helped Mother.
Example: I like cakes the most.
INCOMPLETE COMPARISON There is a part of the comparison that is missing in the sentence.
Explanation: Since the sentence indicates an intensifier, it suggests a degree of comparison. To revise and make the idea clear, add another idea to make it complete and meaningful.
Revision: I like cakes the most among other desserts out there.
Remember: When you are writing a paragraph, your sentence should be clear and understandable.
