Course Objectives Help students understand the concepts and uses of managerial accounting information in the context managerial decision-making. Develop students’ oral and written communication skills in addition to technical accounting knowledge.

Video Quizzes The Quizzes will be available the whole semesters. You will have 5 attemps for each Quiz and the highest score will be recorded.

Group Project Structure Introduce the company and choose a product for your cost investigation (questions 2-7). Questions 8 and 9 are related to the company/ department unit. Describe the process of making the product. Costing: Describe the costs involved in making the product Classify the costs into the categories of fixed vs variable vs mixed costs; direct vs indirect costs; products vs period Determine the direct materials, direct labor and the overhead of the product based on job order costing or process costing Breakeven analysis: Determine the break-even quantity and break-even dollars Application of ABC in overhead allocation: Determine the activity cost pools Determine the cost driver for each cost pool Determine the product cost based on the activities of making the product. Determine the maximum price of the product that the company would buy rather than make.

Group Project Structure Budgeting: Describe the budgeting process of the firm or a department unit Describe how the firm/ department controls the costs using its flexible budget Standard costing: Determine the standard cost for the materials, labor and overhead. Determine the variance for the last period (month or week or day). Why did they have the variance? How would the company control the variance? Discuss the firm ethics in Managerial Accounting Conclusion and recommendations Reference Appendix (transcripts of your interviews, photos)

Project Evaluation Rubrics Topic presentations: 20% Final project report: Analysis: 30% Writing and format: 10% Midterm video presentation: 10% Final video presentation: 20% Peer review reports: 10%

Topic Presentation Prepare slides to discuss the topics 1-8 for each class session. The topic slides should be submitted on the e-learning before the topics start in class. Please note that the actual class schedule will be posted on the e-learning . The class schedule accompanied in this syllabus is suggestive only.

Videos Prepare a 4-5 minute midterm video clip covering topics 1-5. The midterm video clip is required to submit on the e-learning at least one week before the midterm video presentation. Prepare a 5-6 minute final video clip covering topics 1-10. The final video clip is required to submit on the e-learning at least one week before the final video presentation. Every member should have a chance to appear and talk on the videos

Final project report The final project should have at least 4000 words but no more than 6000 words, not including references and appendix. .

Peer Assessment Write a midterm and a final peer review report. The peer review reports are submitted before the midterm/final video presentation days.

Midterm and Final Exam Comprehensive: cover all materials discussed in class. Multiple choice section: similar to those on the publisher’s website. Problems: picked from the textbook homework Essay section: similar to those in the group project/ homework/ case studies discussed in class
