Basic Science skills Observing using the senses to gather information about an object or event. Example: Describing a pencil as yellow.
Observation The most crucial key about observation is Data!
Data information collected from observations
Types of observation Qualitative – description, quality ■ Ex. The ball is orange Quantitative – number; measures, quantity ■ Ex. The ball’s diameter is 23 cm
Basic Science skills Inferring making an "educated guess" about an object or event based on previously gathered data or information. Example: Saying that the person who used a pencil made a lot of mistakes because the eraser was well worn.
Basic Science skills Measuring using both standard and nonstandard measures or estimates to describe the dimensions of an object or event. Example: Using a meter stick to measure the length of a table in centimeters.
Basic Science skills Communicating using words or graphic symbols to describe an action, object or event. Example: Describing the change in height of a plant over time in writing or through a graph.
Basic Science Skills Classifying grouping or ordering objects or events into categories based on properties or criteria. Example: Placing all rocks having certain grain size or hardness into one group.
Basic Science Skill Predicting stating the outcome of a future event based on a pattern of evidence. Example: Predicting the height of a plant in two weeks time based on a graph of its growth during the previous four weeks.
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation”
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Prepare the following materials: Mung bean seeds Plastic container Tissues Water
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: Label one plastic container “Container A” and the other “Container B”
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: Prepare 2 plastic container and add 1 layer of tissue inside each container
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: On Container A, add many mung seeds. While on Container B, add a few mung seed.
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: After adding the seeds on each container, add another layer of tissue above your seeds.
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: Each day, water the plants by this order: Container A – Every other day Container B - Everyday
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Procedure: Whenever you are finished with watering your containers. Always place it where there is sunlight. Each day expose the container by this order: Container A – 30mins per day Container B – 1hr per day
Experiment #1 “Mung Bean plantation” Questions to be answered: What is the progress of the seeds each day? Do you think the mung beans will wilt? How will you describe the characteristic of the seeds on each container? When will the seeds sprout on each container?
