WH Questions and Articles Prepared by Sanjana Faria Mou Lecturer Department of English

WH questions A wh-question begins with a question word. Question words are who, what, which, whose, where, when, why and how? We use a wh-question to ask for information. Form 1. Most wh-questions begin with, a question word + an auxiliary verb + the subject . An auxiliary verb is a form of be (is, are, was, were) or have (has, had) or a modal (can, could, should, would, might, must etc) 2. For negative questions, follow this structure WH-word + Auxiliary/Modal + n't + Subject + Main Verb. .. for example, why didn't she come? or WH-word + Auxiliary/Modal + Subject + not + Main Verb for example, why did she not come?

More examples W/H Word Auxilery Subject Extension Where is the school located? What are you doing? Why do dogs bark? When does the party start? How did they go? Which was the movie you were talking about? Note: When we use do/does/did in the question, the main verb should preserve its basic form. (Don't as s/es/ed to it) For example: What does he do ? what did he eat ? What do you like ?

cont.. 3. The main verb “be” also comes before the subject in questions. Where is Kitty? How are you? What was that noise? 4. If there is more than one auxiliary verb, only the first one comes before the subject. For example, The guerrillas have been hiding in the camp . Question: Where have the guerrillas been hiding? I should have said something . ? Question: What should I have said? My Mother have been sick? Question: How have my mother been ?

Cont.. 5. When expressing quantity, quality, size , and measurement , you should mention the adjective after the w/h word and then place the auxilery. e.g. How long have they been working for? How much time do we have? How many days do you need to finish the work? How tall are you? What time is it? What breed is your cat? What color is your eyes? How rough is your skin?

Examples a) They go to school by bus . Question: How do they go to school? b) They visited Cox’s Bazar last summer. Question: Where did they visit last summer? c) My mother will cook biryani for lunch. Question: What will my mother cook for lunch? d) She bought a dress for the party . Question: Why did she buy a dress? e) The meeting starts at 10 AM. Question: When does the meeting start? f) Rina bought three books from the fair. Question: How many books did Rina buy from the fair? g)I have made a robot. Question: What have I made? h) They have been talking for an hour. Question: How long have they been talking?

Task a) The dinner will start at 7:30 in the evening. b) We invited Shanta and her friends to join the ceremony. c) They’ve been studying for three hours . d) Liza spent 30 dollars to buy the premium subscription. e) Going ‘viral’ has become an obsession nowadays. f) Mina will leave the country soon . g) This is my pen. h) John woke up early to catch his train.

Article There are three articles in the English language: a, an, and the. They are placed before nouns and show whether a given noun is general or specific. A and an , the indefinite articles, show that a noun is general, or non-specific and singular . “I bought a pen” The , the definite article, shows that a noun is specific . “ I bought th e red pen” Rules: 1. When the story first mentions something, the noun has a or an. e.g. I checked into a hotel. 2. But when the same thing is mentioned again, the noun has the. e.g. but I didn't return to the hotel. 3. When there is only one of the things we are talking about, we use “the”. We normally say: the country(side), the earth, the environment, the government, the moon, the ozone layer, the Prime Minister, the sea(side), the sky, the sun, the weather e.g. The sun sets in the West

4. We also commonly use “the” with cinema, theater and (news)paper. Do you often go to the cinema? I read about the accident in the paper. 5. Note that we say “a/the” police officer but the police. A police officer came to the hotel. NOT A police came to the hotel. The police came to the hotel. (= one or more police officers) 6. A phrase which describes something has a/an. Usually followed by a adjective. It was a lovely day. Seattle is a nice old town. This is a better photo. It's a big hotel. 7. But we use “the” with a superlative. It's the biggest hotel in town. This is the best photo. 8. We also use “a/an” to classify something, to say what kind of thing it is. The play was a comedy. This a plastic bottle 9. Do not use any article with plural, general, or uncountable nouns. Dogs are friendly, Water is essential, Honesty is the best policy

10. Don't not use articles with most proper nouns (names of people, countries, cities, etc) country names don’t usually take an article ( Bangladesh, Japan , Australia) unless they are plural or have ‘United’ in the name. ( The Netherlands, The United States of America, The United Kingdom) 11. Use the definite article with ordinal numbers.(first, second, third..) she was the third woman to step on the moon. 12. Usually, the words that start with a vowel has “an” before them. for example, an apple, an orange, an owl, or an umbrella. However, this rule is based on sound not spelling. Therefore, any word that sounds like a vowel will include “an” before them. for example an honest man (pronounced like “onest”) an hour (Pronounced like our), an MA student (Pronounced like EM A) similarly, when a word's beginning sounds like a consonant. it will include an “a” before it. for example, A university (Pronounced like you) A Eurpean country (Pronounced like you), A one dollar note (pronounced like wan)

13. use a/an before someone's job. “she is an engineer” “John is a Doctor” 14. Use “the” before decades. “Telephones were really populer in the 90s” however no article before mentioning any year. “He went missing in 2010” 15. Use “the” when specifically mentioning someone playing a musical instrument. “she plays the drum” “he plays the piano”

Article Complete this story. Put in a/an/the. A man decided to rob (1) ................... bank in the town where he lived. He walked into (2) ..... bank and handed (3) .................. note to one of (4).................... cashiers. (5)…………….. cashier read (6)…………….. note, which told her to give (7)...………….. man some money. Afraid that he might have (8)…………….. gun, she did as she was told. (9) ................... man then walked out of (10)…………….. building, leaving (11)...................note behind. However, he had no time to spend (12)……………….money because he was arrested (13) .................. same day. He had made (14) ................ mistake. He had written (15)................... note on (16).................... back of (17) ………………. envelope. And on (18) .................. other side of (19)..............envelope was his name and address. This clue was quite enough for (20).................. detectives on the case.
