What is Reading ? The act or activity of one that reads. To write is to read. The act or practice of rendering aloud written or printed matter.

Faster reading is also known as speed reading. Any of several technique used to improve one’s ability to read quickly. Faster reading engages your senses even more than normal reading because you use your senses and brain works even more efficiently . What is faster reading?

In the late 1950s, a school teacher named Evelyn Wood had developed a portable, reliable and convenient device as a tool for increasing reading speed. She was committed to understanding why some people were naturally faster at reading than others and was trying to force herself to read very quickly. In 1958, while brushing off the pages of a book she had thrown down in despair, she discovered that the sweeping motion of her hand across the page caught the attention of her eyes, and helped them move more smoothly across the page.Wood first taught the method at the University of Utah, before launching it to the public as Evelyn Wood's Reading Dynamics in Washington, D.C. in 1959. History

Increase in knowledge. Vocabulary improvement. Generating new ideas. Devloping language. Helpful in making communication better. Time saving . Merits of Faster Reading

Ignoring important contents. Not so beneficial in comprehensive studies. No proper understanding of words. Taking wrong considerations. Missing important details of the text . Demerits of Faster Reading

Methods of improvement Read about things that interest you. Read material that is at your level, or just a little difficult for you. Learn to read in depth, stay on the same subject for a while. Let your imagination get involved. Don’t worry about what you don’t understand while reading.

Read about things that interest you If you are interested in what you are reading about, the words will come alive, and you will be motivated to understand. The more you read, the better you will become at reading. Just get started and it will become a habit.

2.Read material that is at your level,or just a little difficult for you Read material that you find easy to read. Read material that is just a little challenging. Looking up many unknown words in a conventional dictionary is tedious, and the results of the dictionary search quickly forgotten. Stay within your comfort zone and keep reading .

3.Learn to read in depth, stay on the same subject for a while Familiarity with the subject. Do not just read short articles. Commit to books. Stay with one author for at least one book. Try to read a few different books or articles about the same subject.

Learn to enjoy your reading without asking too many questions or analyzing too much. It will just spoil the sensual enjoyment of the reading experience. You do not need to predict or analyze. Just enjoy and look forward to absorbing the information, ideas and thoughts expressed by the writer . 4.Let your imagination get involved

5 .Don’t worry about what you don’t understand while reading Most of your reading should be for pleasure. E njoy reading without understanding all of what you read. Learn to enjoy reading, even while feeling that you do not fully understand or remember what you have read .

Skimming Skimming  is a process of speed reading that involves visually searching the sentences of a page for clues to meaning. Skimming is usually seen more in adults than in children. It is conducted at a higher rate than normal  reading  for comprehension. Methods of faster reading

Saving time. Increasing vocabulary. Reduces stress. Enhance smartness. Analytical thinking. Advantages

Ignoring important contents. Missing important details of the text. Not so beneficial in comprehensive studies . Disadvantages

Meta guiding Meta guiding  is the visual guiding of the eye using a finger or pointer, such as a pen, in order for the eye to move faster along the length of a passage of text. It involves drawing invisible shapes on a page of text in order to broaden the visual span for speed reading .

Paying more attention. More comprehension. Broaden visual span. Visual cortex increase. Later retrival . Advantages

Leads missing details. Loss of comprehension. Reduce memory. Disadvantages

Effect on comprehension Skimming alone should not be used when complete comprehension  of the text is the objective. Skimming is mainly used when researching and getting an overall idea of the text. Duggan & Payne (2009) compared skimming with reading normally, given only enough time to read normally through half of a text. They found that the main points of the full text were better understood after skimming than after normal reading.

Claims of speed readers The top contestants in the World Championship Speed Reading Competition typically read around 1,000 to 2,000 words per minute with approximately 50% comprehension or above. The world champion is Anne Jones with 4,700 words per minute with 67% comprehension. The 10,000 word/min claimants have yet to reach this level.

Appreciation and Criticism Much controversy is raised over this point. This is mainly because a reading comprehension level of 50% is deemed unusable by some educationalists (Carver 1992 ). Speed reading advocates claim that it is a great success and even state that it is a demonstration of good comprehension for many purposes ( Buzan 2000).

Collection of Data The collection of data we have presented to you has been collected from following sources: Internet Books & Dictionary Manual work

You have only half learned the art of reading if you haven’t added to it the art of skipping and skimming. Conclusion
