Whole Group & Small Group Teaching strategies in English

Whole group teaching strategies

Brain storming sessions

Students work as a whole group with the teacher, or in small groups. Begin with a stimulus such as a word, phrase, picture, or object. A recorder records all responses to that stimulus without prejudgment on the Blackboard. Mind mapping of the group. Time Pressure generates more enthusiasm All ideas count; everything is recorded. More ideas can be built on the ideas of others.

Advantages of brainstorming Suitable for large groups All the students are involved Concentration, attention, involvement is ensured A lot of ideas are generated Based on the principle of constructivism diversion from the topic can be easily monitored infectious enthusiasm draws the introverts out on the spot correction of errors preparatory ground for writing task

Disadvantages of Brainstorming sessions Lead to unruly classes Difficult for the teacher to manage Problems in assessment Introverts get overshadowed Problem of mass answering Confusion and chaos Time management Problems in systematic development of topic

Monitoring the session Prior planning to avoid wastage of time Scoring out roll numbers to ensure judicious participation Negative marking for speaking out of turn Questions to keep the topic on the track A detailed explanation of the rules beforehand and the penalty. Alert manoeuvring of the development of the topic

An Example from the Text Character sketch of Tiger King Brave Superstitious Negligent towards duty Arrogant Self centred ruthless unreasonable

Inside-Outside Circle Students are arranged in two circles one smaller and inner, the other outer and bigger. The Students from the smaller inside circle face those in the outer larger circle and vice versa. The students of inner and outer circles take alternate turns to speak The movement can be clockwise or anticlockwise as per the directions of the teacher Activities can be sequence ordering to complete stories, answering Questions of the other circle, guessing game, True or False statements, Giving Reasons etc. Recorder will maintain the score board.

Advantages of Inside-Outside Circle Order and discipline is ensured No room for confusion or chaos Systematic development of the topic Ensures judicious participation Easy to assess the individual performance Clarity of thought, understanding No wastage of time in execution

Disadvantages of Inside-Outside Circle Organization is cumbersome Does not lend itself to all types of classrooms Mixing up of direction, turn of answering All students do not face the teacher Requires a lot of time in organizing Specific type of furniture

Monitoring Tool List of students in the order of seating arrangement to avoid confusion of turn of answering Procuring required furniture and arranging for a suitable room before hand Discussing the arrangement and functioning of the activity with the students. Keep Two watchmen to keep a track of the proceedings Reflect the proceedings on the blackboard to ensure proper development of the topic

An example from the text Steps taken by Evans to plan his escape- inner circle Steps taken by Governor to prevent Evans’ escape-outer circle

Snowballing technique The whole class is divided into two groups Questions are hurled at each other Maximum 30-45 sec for for answering More snowballs more score Losing chance to answer/ask questions leads to negative marking

Advantages of snowballing Profound knowledge of the topic Quick reflexes Very infectious No distractions/ disinterested students No room for boredom /lethargy Very active class

disadvantages of snowballing Very disorderly and chaotic Prior planning is required Time pressure might lead to wrong responses Slow learners might get side tracked Monitoring by teacher is difficult Recording scores is difficult

Monitoring the session Supervise the preparation of the snowballs Arrange the groups convenient for snowballing Be alert to squabbles Ensure impartial time keeping Systematic score keeping is a must Guide the students to the right question/answer with suitable questions

Example from the text Content Rich lessons lend themselves to a lot of very short questions which can be hurled at each other Examples We are not afraid to Die … If We are Together Indigo

Reading Rockets Content of the lesson is written on separate paper rockets in point form Rockets are hurled at the students randomly The targets read out the points. They form a group and arrange themselves in the order in which the points appear in the lesson or group them under appropriate headings. Recorder records the points in the right order on the blackboard Rest of the class approves/disapproves the order

Advantages of Reading Rockets Familiarity of the content No time bound answers so no Time Pressure Promotes thinking skills Stimulates memory Entertaining and interesting

Disadvantages of Reading Rockets No scoring so less motivating Chaotic Time consuming Depends only on memory Wrong sequences are common

Monitoring Tool Prior preparation of the topic wise rockets Teacher must have a record of the content presented on the rockets Prepare plenty of Topics Guide the students in case of mistakes Take care of the movements of the students to avoid accidents Motivate the students with cheering/applauding

Examples from the Syllabus Features of a classified Differences between Formal and Informal invitations Contrasting characters like Sophie and Jansie

Musical Chairs Each line of the poem is written on a piece of paper The pieces are distributed among students The corresponding meaning of the lines is pasted on the chairs Students move in a circle trying to match the line with the meaning Two points for the correct matching in the first round Two negative points for remaining standing at the end of the round The round is repeated till the entire poem is complete The lines and the meaning are written in two separate columns on the Blackboard Students read the poem and put the lines and their meaning in proper sequence The summary of the poem is developed from the meaning of the lines

Advantages of musical chairs Captures the interest of the students Stimulates thinking skill Promotes self learning Rearranging/ regrouping skill is improved Provides opportunities for writing summaries Leads to deeper understanding of the poem

Disadvantages of musical chairs Leads to unruly classes Time consuming Difficulty in comprehension of the poem Misinterpretation is a possibility Problems in reordering and wrong interpretation Chances of injuries

Adequate strong furniture has to be selected before hand A spacious room for easy movement has to be selected Preparation of pieces of paper Pasting the meaning on the chairs Ensuring the correct matching of lines with meaning Correct sequencing of the lines Supervising the writing of the summary

parliamentary sessions/ Group debating A debatable topic is framed on the content of the lesson The class is divided into two groups- one ruling party, one opposition The speaker/Chair Person carries out the proceedings Secretary records the points on the blackboard The house decides the validity of the argument

Advantages of debating Speaking skill is improved Reasoning power is sharpened Introverts find it easier to speak Organised class Manoeuvring the class towards the right answers is easier

Disadvantages of debating Frequent Squabbles are a possibility Unnecessary arguments may crop in Time consuming process Grasping the overall content by all the students is a little difficult A lot of prior preparation is required

Teacher has to sit with both the groups before to supervise the preparation of content Check the understanding of the topic of each student Arrange the classroom before hand Settle the squabbles Argue the validity of the points made Supervise the writing task later
