Major Endocrine Glands in the Body WHO’S IN CONTROL?

HYPO THALAMUS The hypothalamus is found at the base of the brain. It produces hormones that help turn the other endocrine glands in your body on and off. It is the link between the nervous system and the endocrine system.

HYPO THALAMUS Therefore, the hypothalamus knows about the sensations you are aware of , such as smell of a beautiful flower or a picturesque view. At the same time, it also controls those things that you are not aware of, such as the level of hormones in your body or your internal temperature. The hypothalamus secretes hormones that stimulate or suppress the release of the hormones in the pituitary gland.

PITUITARY GLAND The pituitary gland or hypophysis is a pea-sized gland found in the center of the skull, right behind the bridge of the nose and below the hypothalamus of the brain. The hypothalamus communicates with the pituitary gland through nerve impulses and hormones. In general, a stimulus is  something that provokes or causes an action or response , as in Failing that test was the stimulus I needed to start studying harder.

PITUITARY GLAND The hypothalamus is responsible for triggering the production of hormones by the pituitary gland. For many years, the pituitary gland was referred to as the “master gland” because it produces hormones that control many activities of the other endocrine glands. With the discovery that the pituitary gland was controlled by the hypothalamus, the nickname “master gland” gradually dropped out of use.

PITUITARY GLAND The pituitary gland plays a very important role in the endocrine system since it releases many hormones that control other endocrine glands. It is made of two lobes, the anterior and posterior glands, each secreting different hormones.

HORMONES SECRETED By THE PITUITARY GLAND Pituitary Hormones Action Anterior Pituitary Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) Stimulates the adrenal glands to produce related steroid hormones Growth hormone ( GH ) Stimulates the growth of bones and tissues Melanocyte-stimulating hormone ( MSH ) Regulates melanin production Follicle-stimulating hormone ( FSH ) and luteinizing hormone ( LH ) Controls sexual function and production of the sex hormones: estrogen and progesterone in females, or testosterone in males Thyroid-stimulating hormone ( TSH ) Stimulates the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormone Prolactin Stimulates milk production in women

HORMONES SECRETED By THE PITUITARY GLAND Pituitary Hormones Action Posterior Pituitary Antidiuretic hormone ( ADH ) or vasopressin Controls water loss in the kidneys Oxytocin Stimulates milk ejection or secretion and contraction of the uterus during childbirth

PITUITARY GLAND The pituitary gland also secretes endorphins, the hormones responsible for reducing feelings of pain. Endorphins are the body’s natural painkillers. Endorphins are released by the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in response to pain or stress, this group of peptide hormones both relieves pain and creates a general feeling of well-being.
