Why might some people have an oppositional/aberrant reading to the film American History X Omar Rasoul
The Review Movie reviewer Kenneth Turan reviewed American History X October. 28th 1998 He was born October 27th, 1946 His Review for American History X was featured in the Los Angeles Times, October 28th, 1998 The review was titled ‘Skin-Deep Racial Lessons’
Article Summery The reviewer says that the film turns out to be a simplistic and unconvincing look at a serious problem. States that the film and main character are more magnetic before the character leaves Naziism behind which in turn takes some of the interest out of his character once converted, which he states is a negative due to how the film intends for the audience to view his growth and change as good news.
Article Summery Points out how although it is stated as bad the way the director captures the hate speech cinematography wise “merely underlines the excitement he feels at capturing it on film”. “Many of the supporting characters are either embarrassingly conceived or clumsily acted, and the explanations for radical changes in behaviour tend to be relentlessly one-dimensional”.
reviewer’s background and how this might influence his opinion Turan was raised in an observant Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. In terms of how this might influence his opinion this might be through the fact that as a Jewish man understandably he takes the subject matter and issues the film discusses in a very serious and critical manner and as the article showed this was something he was critical of the film about, specifically critiquing how the director captures hate speech in the film in a way that although they say it is bad it is captured in a way that “merely underlines the excitement he (director) feels at capturing it on film”.
