GOVERNMENT SCHEMES FOR EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN

The department of women and Child development has been implementing special programs for holistic development and empowerment of women with major focus to improve their socioeconomic status there has been policies shift from time to time based on shift in emphasis . The year 2001 was declared as women’s empowerment year to bring greater focus on the programs for women.

A program of support to training cum employment (STEP) for women was launched in 1987 to strengthen and improve skills for employment opportunities for women below poverty line in traditional sectors of agriculture small animal husbandry etc. were women employed on large scale

OBJECTIVES OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT SCHEMES Create an ambience in the society for tolerance and mutual respect for women. Ensure that education becomes accessible to the socially and economically marginalized women and girls. Enhance self image and self confidence of women. Participates in decision making Enhance participation of women and girls in formal and non-formal education programmes. Ensure physical, psychological, social, economic development of women.

The Integrated Child Development Services Programme(ICDS): programme of the Department of Women’s Empowerment and Child development . Anganwadi services Flagships and health and nutritional supplements to infants Pre-natal and post-natal care for pregnant and lactating mothers

Dispense iron tablets and iodine fortified salt to pregnant and lactating mothers Dietary rations from Anganwadi workers

K ISHORI BALIKA YOJANA Scheme for adolescent girls initiated in 2001 with assistance from the Government of India as well as from the World Bank. For adolescent girls in 11-18age group who belongs to BPL households. Provides information and training to these girls about balanced diet, importance of family welfare, interpersonal skills and vocational skills .

OTHER PROGRAMMES FOR WOMEN Old Age Pension Scheme: Applicable to both men and women, urban and rural, provides Rs. 400 per month to those who are above 60 years of age. Pension scheme for widows/ homeless/aged: Applicable only in rural areas and is implemented by the District Social Welfare officer. Financial assistance to destitute widows: Sum of Rs. 1000/- per month. Scheme for rural areas and is implemented by the Gram Panchayats.

Financial assistance to remarriage of Widows: A sum of Rs. 11,000/- per month below the age of 35 years. Grant to female student who has passed intermediate from BPL family enable her to pursue her studies: A one time grant of Rs. 25,000/- given to female student to enable her to complete her education. Scheme started in 2006-2007.

EMPOWERMENT THAT PROMOTE GENDER EQUITY SCHEMES Under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan ( Education for all) several schemes initiated to reduce the gender gap in the education of children. Set up by department of education 1. Early Chid Care Education Centres(ECCE) To ensure better enrollment and retention of girls in the primary school. Provision of good quality education to girls. ICDS have the responsibility for running the ECCE Centers .

2. National Programme on Education for Girls at Elementary Level(NPEGEL). Focus attention on the educationally deprived sections and to encourage the enrolment, retention and quality education of the girlls belonging to SC/ST communities. 3.Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya(KGBV) Intended for girls belonging to the SC/ST/OBC, religious minorities and BPL households. It gives a second chance for mainstreaming rural girls belonging to deprived social backgrounds who could not study up to or beyond V.

It provides facility to stay in hostel while studying for the upper primary stage of elementary education from classes VI to VIII.

Central government schemes National maternity benefit scheme : this scheme Is sponsored by central government and Is implemented by department at district level through ICDS project. Under this scheme Rs 500 is paid in one installment to pregnant women to meet their delivery expenses .It may also be paid after delivery.The benefit is admissible for the first two births.

Balika samrudhi yojana: Under this scheme Rs.500 given to nursing mother of a girl child belonging to BPL families .This is limited to two females live birth. Ladli laxmi yojana: Ladli Ladli Laxmi Yojana has been implemented in Madhya Pradesh in 2007 with the objective of positive thinking towards girl child birth, improvement in sex ratio, improvement in educational status and health status of girls and laying the foundation for their good future.

NATIONAL COMMON MINIMUM PROGRAM Committments in the National minimum program for women were Legislation on domestic violence and against gender discrimination will be enacted . At least one third of all funds flowing into Panchayat will be earmarked for Programs for the development of women and children. Village women and their association will be encouraged to assume responsibility for all development scheme relating to drinking water, sanitation,Primary education, health and nutrition .
