English has four major word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. Word Transformation means transforming a word into a different class by adding different suffixes or prefixes or using other techniques. Every word is a part of a word family for example, creative, creation, creativity, creator, creatively, create, recreate, are all part of the same family but they serve different functions in a sentence Word transformation does not have exact patterns or rules. However there are some common suffixes to recognise. One easy way to identify the word class is to identify how it functions in a sentence WORD TRANSFORMATION

COMMON SUFFIX PATTERN Noun endings : -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -er/-or, ence/ance (decide → decision, achieve → achievement, happy → happiness, perform→performance, dependent→dependence) Adjective endings : -able, -al, -ous, -ive, -ful, -less (memorize → memorable, nation → national, danger → dangerous, hope→hopeless) Adverb endings: usually -ly (scientific → scientifically, quick → quickly, ) Verb endings: -ate, -en, -fy, -ize (Creation→create, Strength→strengthen, Beautiful→beautify, Final→finalize
