What is Work Immersion? Work Immersion refers to the subject of the Senior High School Curriculum, it is a specialized subject which involves hands-on experience or work simulation in which learners can apply their competencies and acquired knowledge relevant to their track. The work immersion Program is one of the course requirements for graduation.
Objectives of Work Immersion Work immersion will help develop among the learner life and career skills, and will prepare them to make decisions on post-secondary education or employment. Through partnership building, DepEd hopes that the Partner Institutions will provide learners with work immersion opportunities, workplace or hands-on experience, and additional learning resources. It aims to make the learners:
appreciate the importance and application of the principles and theories learned in school; enhance their technical knowledge and skills; enrich their skills in communications and human relations; and develop good work habits, attitudes, appreciation and respect for work.
DepEd Order No. 30, s. 2017 or the DepEd Guidelines for Senior High School Work Immersion was issued as basis for the implementation of work immersion in all Senior High Schools (SHSs). Work Immersion is a key feature of SHS Curriculum. This initially started in School Year 2017-2018 for all SHSs. Below are some important information that you should know about Work Immersion.
Rationale One of the goals of the K to 12 Basic Education Program is to develop in learners the competencies, work ethic, and values relevant to pursuing further education and/or joining the world of work. To achieve greater congruence between basic education and the nation’s development targets, Work Immersion, a required subject, has been incorporated into the curriculum.
Rationale This subject will provide learners with opportunities: to become familiar with the work place; for employment simulation; and to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in authentic work environments.
To achieve the above objectives, Work Immersion is thus a requirement for graduation from secondary education. Learners are immersed in actual work environments such as workshops offices and laboratories in which their prior training is relevant. But this is given clarification on DepEd Order No. 39, s. 2018.
Though the intention of Work Immersion is to provide SHS learners with opportunities to become familiar with the workplace , simulate employment , and to apply their competencies in areas of specialization/applied subjects in actual work environments, DepEd recognizes other options that may equally prepare learners for all curriculum exits.
For all tracks, schools may opt to devise unique delivery model with a minimum of 80 and a maximum of 320 hours following the Curriculum Guide. All TVL learners shall have completed the required learning competencies of a particular specialization before Work Immersion. The nominal duration of specialization for TVL shall be considered in crafting the delivery model of the school.
Due to pandemic, the Office of the Curriculum Instruction (CI) through the Bureau of Curriculum Development (BCD) issued the Memorandum DM-CI-2020-0085 or the Guidelines for Work Immersion Implementation During Crisis Situation as basis for the implementation of Work Immersion during Covid-19 for SY 2020-2021. Though students are prohibited or limited in coming to school, learning should continue. The memorandum served as basis for the implementation of Work immersion which is a required subject for TVL track. In the absence of new issuances pertaining to Senior High School (SHS) work immersion for SY 2021-2022 the same memorandum still stands as basis for its implementation.
Different learning modalities or blending learning approach which combines technology-based e- learnig , distance learning, and traditional classroom-based methods will be employed by your Work Immersion teacher to ensure the acquisition of the academic requirements for SHS without sacrificing the standards of quality education, and safety and security of learners and teachers.
The activities in all tracks can be performed in different schemes which include in-school, home-based, community-based, and school-industry partnership. All lessons and activities of Work Immersion or its equivalent shall be delivered using different modalities applicable to the learners and schools.
In-School. The school shall provide a mock environment given the available school facilities. Arrangements shall be made between school management and parents/guardians. Guided by the learning competencies, SHS learners will perform the activities.
Home-based . The learners shall perform their activities at home but will be monitored regularly by the SHS teacher. This scheme is applicable only for learners with available materials, tools, or devices that can be used to demonstrate their competencies. Guided by the learning competencies, the teacher and learners need to select the activities to be performed.
Community-based. The school may arrange with the government and non-governmental organizations, such as local government unit or private sector, the necessary environment. They can participate in government’s projects, community development activities, and other relevant community projects guided by the learning competencies.
School and Industry Tie-up. The school and partner institution shall arrange the needed environment of learners provided that physical distancing is observed at all times.
