World Sight Day 2025: “Love Your Eyes”
World Sight Day is observed annually on the second Thursday of October, and in 2025 it falls on 9 October. Organized by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), this day shines a global spotlight on vision impairment, blindness, and the critical importance of universal eye health.
This year’s theme, “Love Your Eyes,” invites individuals, communities, and policymakers to prioritize eye health — making eye care accessible, available, and affordable for everyone, everywhere. The campaign emphasizes every story counts, encouraging people to share their personal vision journeys, and pushing for eye care outreach even at the level of parliaments and ministries via the Global Challenge initiative. Why It Matters
Vision impairment and blindness affect over 2.2 billion people globally — nearly a quarter of the world’s population. Of these, about 1 billion cases are considered preventable or treatable through proper screening, refractive correction, cataract surgery, or timely medical intervention.
Diabetic retinopathy, arising from uncontrolled diabetes
Age-related macular degeneration, corneal diseases, and others
Importantly, about 80% of blindness is avoidable if timely eye care is made available and people are aware of preventive measures.
Vision impairment disproportionately affects low- and middle-income countries, where obstacles to accessing care (cost, distance, lack of trained providers) are more severe “Eye care is a basic human right.”
“Love your eyes – because vision matters!”
Encourage everyone to get their eyes tested and protect their sight.
