Introduction:-
What is World Sight Day?
●An annual day of awareness to focus global attention on
blindness and vision impairment.
●Organized by: International Agency for the Prevention of
Blindness (IAPB).
●Observed on: Second Thursday of October every year.
●Aim: To raise public awareness about vision health and
encourage regular eye check-ups.

Historical Background:-
●First observed in 2000 as part of the VISION
2020: The Right to Sight initiative.
●Supported by WHO and IAPB.
●It unites governments, NGOs, and eye health
professionals globally.

“Eye care is a basic human right.”
“Love your eyes – because vision
matters!”
Encourage everyone to get their eyes
tested and protect their sight.

Global Vision Statistics:-
●At least 2.2 billion people have vision
impairment or blindness.

●1 billion cases could have been prevented or
are yet to be addressed.

Leading causes:
●Refractive errors (uncorrected
myopia/hypermetropia/astigmatism)
●Cataract
●Glaucoma
●Diabetic Retinopathy
●Corneal diseases
●90% of visually impaired live in low- and
middle-income countries

Common Causes of Vision Loss:-
●CataractLens opacity causing blurred vision
●Refractive ErrorMyopia, Hypermetropia, Astigmatism
●Glaucoma Optic nerve damage due to raised IOP
●Diabetic RetinopathyRetinal damage from diabetes (with
control)
●ARMD Macular degeneration in elderly
●Corneal BlindnessDue to infection, trauma, keratitis.

Preventable Blindness – Key
Message:-
●80% of blindness is preventable or treatable.
●Regular eye exams can detect early changes.
●Proper spectacle correction can restore vision.
●Surgery and treatment can prevent
irreversible blindness.

Role of Optometrists and Eye Care Professionals:-
●Early detection of refractive errors & ocular
diseases.
●Patient education about vision hygiene and
eye safety.
●Community vision screening & school eye
programs.
●Counseling for visual aids, low vision, and
rehabilitation.

How Can We Contribute?
●Promote eye screening camps.
●Encourage spectacle wear among students.
●Spread awareness through social media,
posters, and talks.
●Educate patients about diabetic eye care and
UV protection.
●Use the hashtag #LoveYourEyes on social
media.

Global & National Initiatives:-
●VISION 20/20: The Right to Sight.
●Universal Eye Health – Global Action Plan
(2014–2019).
●NPCBVI (India): National Programme for
Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment.
●Ayushman Bharat & Rashtriya Bal Swasthya
Karyakram (RBSK) support vision screening.
